RM De Luxe Saloon
Service History
Supplied new in Hucknall in 1931 At Richards Automobiles. Although its early life is patchy it was purchased by Percy Newsome in 1959 who used the car as a daily driver to his soon to be BMC main franchise dealer in Hyson green. This delightful RM "Fabric" Saloon boasts a fascinating specification and provenance. Finished in the rare and striking combination of Blue over Black with a Silver swage line. After being taken off the road in 1961, the car spent an extraordinary 47 years in dry storage before undergoing an extensive, photographically documented restoration between 2009 and 2013. The result is a wonderfully detailed example, with the interior authentically re-trimmed in Austin’s correct-pattern wool cloth upholstery, and retaining matching chassis and engine numbers.
Introduced in January 1931, the RM was the last of the short-wheelbase (6ft 3in) saloons before being superseded by the longer RN. Combining charming proportions with practicality, the RM featured wide doors for easier rear seat access, a gutsy 747cc side-valve engine producing 24bhp, and cable-operated drum brakes all round. Period figures claimed 35-40 mpg and up to 60mph for the more adventurous drivers.
This particular car is widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples. It has been shown successfully, winning awards and even featuring on a magazine cover (included in the history file). Under its last ownership, the Austin has been meticulously maintained by Austin 7 specialist David Wall at the Toad Hall Workshops, Hoveton, Norfolk, and is described as a low-mileage example that starts on the button and drives beautifully.
The car is accompanied by a comprehensive file of documentation, including restoration photographs, historical paperwork, an Austin Seven Centenary Medal, Centenary Rally plates, and other related ephemera. This is a decidedly rare and special Seven—ideal for the collector seeking one of the very best.
Rare RM Saloon, last of the short-wheelbase models. Supplied new in Nottingham, special order colour scheme. Sunshine roof fitted by J. Richards, Hucknall Rd. Extensively restored 2009–2013 with photographic record. Authentically retrimmed in Austin wool cloth. Matching chassis and engine numbers. Multi-award winner and magazine cover car. Professionally maintained by marque specialist. Starts easily and drives superbly.
