EXTERIOR

Having recently undergone a full refresh, the condition of this 280SL is superb. The metallic grey paintwork (originally factory blue) presents to an excellent standard with a high-gloss, smooth finish. Over the past year, the car has seen significant cosmetic and mechanical improvements, with more than £20,000 invested in parts and labour. The sought-after hardtop is in good order and finished in contrasting black, as is the soft top, which shows minimal wear and features a clear rear window. The chrome bumpers and trim are also in excellent condition, with no damage to the chrome and no notable marks on the rubbers. All original Mercedes hub caps are present and correctly body-coloured.

INTERIOR

The interior remains highly original and is in excellent condition throughout. The MB-Tex upholstery is free from any damage on both the seats and door cards. The wooden trim appears to have been refurbished at some stage and still presents very well. The dashboard top has avoided the usual sun damage and is free from any cracks. A new carpet set, featuring the correct black square-weave pattern, has been fitted. The original Becker Europa radio remains in place.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The engine bay presents to an excellent standard, reflecting the attention to detail applied throughout this Mercedes. The overall condition and appearance beneath the bonnet are superb. The matching-numbers engine was removed during the respray, and many components were stripped and either restored or replaced as needed. The car subsequently underwent a full mechanical shakedown. A full breakdown of all the work carried out has been documented and filed.

HISTORY FILE

This magnificent Mercedes 280SL ‘Pagoda’ was first registered in August 1968 and originally supplied new to the US. It was imported from Japan in 2019 and is now fully UK-registered, complete with a V5 document and registration number. The accompanying history file includes numerous SL Shop invoices for parts, a Mercedes-Benz Date of Manufacture letter, import/export documentation, and a full breakdown of the recent work completed – totalling over 300 hours of labour.
