The Ford GT wasn’t developed in a sprawling corporate office; it was born in a secret, windowless basement at Ford’s headquarters and assembled by renowned engineering specialists Multimatic. Designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1966 Le Mans victory, the car was built with a singular, ruthless purpose: to win the GTE Pro class at Le Mans.
Unlike its 2005 predecessor, which was a retro-styled tribute, this is a "race car for the road." Every vent, buttress, and curve dictated by the wind tunnel first and the stylists second.
At the core of the GT lies a bespoke carbon fibre tub with pushrod suspension front and rear, plus a seven speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox that’s integrated within the rear suspension. All of the body panels are made from carbon fibre, the vast majority of its metal components are made from aluminium. All up it weighs just 1385kg dry making it lighter than any of its more obvious rivals.
Powered by a race proven 638 bhp 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 it will go from zero to 60mph in 2.8sec and on to a top speed of 216mph. It features five different drive modes: Wet, Comfort, Sport, Track and V-max. In Sport and Track there is an anti-lag system that eliminates turbo lag by keeping the turbines spinning irrelevant of the throttle position.
The GT’s handling dynamics, coupled with its lightweight construction and aerodynamic design, made it one of the best-handling supercars of its time, and it has the racing pedigree and exotic feel of a fully-fledged hypercar.
Driving a Ford GT is an intimate, visceral experience. The seats are bolted directly to the carbon fibre monocoque to save weight and lower the centre of gravity; instead of sliding the seat, you move the adjustable pedal box and steering wheel to fit you.
On the road, it’s surprisingly composed, but on a circuit, it transforms. The hydraulic steering—a rarity in the modern era—provides a level of feedback that electronic racks simply cannot match. It feels light, telepathic, and incredibly flat through corners. It doesn't just drive; it slices.
When these cars were released, Ford famously hand-picked the owners through an intense application process, requiring buyers to sign a two-year no-resale contract. Now that those contracts have expired, the 2018 GT has solidified its place as a cornerstone of the modern collector market.
