EXTERIOR
This incredible 10k mile RS500 Cosworth looks magnificent in its factory-correct hue with a deep, consistent gloss all round. The jet black paint catches the light beautifully with all-original panels and perfect shut lines throughout. The RS500 front splitter and additional rear spoiler are present and correct, and all the windows are factory-etched with the car’s registration number. Quite remarkably, even the original late-1986 Dunlop D40 tyres are still fitted. Entirely unmodified and completely unrestored, it's a genuine survivor in truly outstanding original condition. An extraordinary find worthy of any collection, this is without doubt the finest RS500 we’ve seen.
INTERIOR
The entire cabin is amazingly well preserved, looking and feeling every bit the low mileage. The grey Roma velour is immaculate throughout, and even on close inspection there’s no damage or wear to the bolsters. The original three-spoke steering wheel is first-rate with an excellent grain to the leather and no unnecessary shine. At the top of the dash there are no cracks from over exposure to the sun – the car has always been garaged – and all the switchgear functions as intended, including the original Ford cassette radio and on-board computer. The carpets and headlining are very well presented, the seatbelt buttons are unfaded, and having never been fitted with any aftermarket speakers, the door cards and parcel shelf are pristine.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
In race trim, the Sierra could reliably produce 500bhp; the 500 road going versions, however, were sensibly pegged to 224bhp. Revisions to the standard Cosworth YB engine were extensive, even if an increase of 20bhp over standard sounds small by today’s standards. Under the bonnet of this particular example is a very tidy unrestored engine bay, not overly dressed to a concours standard but excellent, original, and unmodified.
When the car was taken out of long-term storage after 29 years with the same owner, it was fully re-commissioned by Cosworth specialist John Taylor. The work carried out was extensive and included a full engine service with all fluids and belts changed (original belts retained), a complete flush of the fuel system, and an overhaul of the brakes. To keep the car as original as possible but also mechanically sound, the only items replaced were the brake discs and pads (originals retained), the fuel tank (due to sediment from old fuel evaporation), and the battery.
