EXTERIOR
The original Dimma 205 was designed and produced by Baudouin Michele in 1985 with the styling based on the World Rally Championship winning 205 T16 Group B rally car. The body kit was approved and promoted by Peugeot themselves at that time and even the boss of the Peugeot Sport competition department, Jean Todt, had one as his company car.
This car was discovered after 17 years of storage and in 2023 was sent straight back to Dimma UK owner Terry Pankhurst for a rotisserie restoration. The work included a total strip and refit of the kit as well as attending to the inside, outside and undercarriage of the body.
With its wide arches, big rear wing and Testarossa-inspired strakes the silhouette is simply sensational. The spectacular Curacao Blue paintwork pops from every angle – there really is nothing quite like it!
With all the work completed on the exterior the car has been subject to full PPF to ensure the longevity of the paint work and condition, ensuring no unwanted stone chips.
INTERIOR
The dramatic exterior is contrasted by a grey leather interior with seats piped blue – again all installed from new by Dimma as illustrated on the seat inserts. The interior space has been preserved well, with seat bolsters and door cards showing light patina, whilst thankfully the headlining remains tight and rear parcel shelf intact. The wheel and gear knob again appear in good condition whilst a boost gauge, now residing in the air vent, ensures you are aware of the turbo’s performance.
The Turbo Technics plaque sits proudly on the dash in front of the passenger whilst a factory fitted Clarion radio cassette player will have you reaching for those classic albums to accompany that B road blast.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The addition of the Garrett water-cooled T25 turbo boosts power output to 175 bhp at 5000 rpm with peak torque to 182 lb ft at a low 3000 rpm. This results in greater power throughout the rev range, and given the T25 is one of the smaller turbochargers in the range turbo lag is countered with power more readily on tap.
An innocent looking switch, marked “high” and “low” instantly alters the boost setting. The lower setting is 0.3 bar but flicking the switch to “high” produces a pressure of 0.65 bar, which is just over 9 psi. To cope with all this extra load, the light and compact engine has had to be slightly modified, with the compression ratio being raised from 9.6: 1 to 8.6:1 by milling the piston crowns, the electronic control unit being re-mapped and the oil cooler being uprated. Additionally an oil supply is fed to the turbo from the engine through an Aeroquip pipe before returning to the sump where a baffle is fitted to prevent oil surge.
The Bosch LE2 Jetronic fuel injection system remains as on the production 1.9 but with an additional injector mounted in the throttle body.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
One of Terry Pankhurst’s first moves was to design the iconic Dimma 3 piece 16 inch Wheel; completing the OEM plus aesthetic and raising the desirability of the Dimma 205 to another level. Now restored with perfectly polished lips, the staggered set sits on Falken rubber on all four corners.
The braking system has been overhauled with new hoses and hardware and does a fantastic job of harnessing that extra power.
HISTORY FILE
First registered in 1988, this example went straight to Dimma UK and then on to Turbo Technics for the engine upgrade. With both the bodywork and engine installed from new this makes the car a very rare original ‘full fat’ conversion.
Terry Pankhurst had quickly established a network of 12 Peugeot main dealers around the country, who between them, sold around 250 brand new conversions. These are considered the “factory” cars which are highly sought after and collectable. Many were uprated, like this car, with Turbo Technics conversions or 16v engines.
After considerable time out of the public eye, the car became available in 2023 and was subject to a £20k rotisserie restoration from Dimma UK. As well as the aforementioned work to the body, the axle was refurbished alongside new suspension and braking system. In 2024 leading specialists, Pug1Off, then went to work on the drivetrain and a further £8k was invested in rebuilding the head, install of an OE Mi16 clutch kit and the Piper exhaust amongst a myriad of other works.
Probably one of the most exciting cars to have been developed in the 80’s, this wild 205 comes with it’s original book pack alongside Turbo Technics literature from new.
