Overview

In 2007, when Aston gave us a preview of the V12 Vantage with the bonkers Vantage RS Concept, even the most ardent Aston fan couldn’t have predicted how successful it would be. Even the boss of Aston at the time only said they would “consider low volume production”.

By the time production of the first generation ended, a rather incredible 1,199 had been produced. Not a “low volume” special then. Demand was so intense that they had to re-engineer the front end to homologate it for sale in the US, where supply struggled to meet demand.

As they say, hindsight is 20/20, but it’s easy to see why it was such a hit – and remains high on many enthusiasts’ wishlists. For starters, the Vantage is an incredibly well proportioned and beautifully styled machine. We’d go so far as to say it’s probably the prettiest car Aston Martin has ever made, which would make it one of the prettiest cars anyone has ever made, period. Whacking a shuddering great 6-litre V12 into the front was only ever going to make things better and, surprise surprise, it did. And then some.

The V12 doesn’t add otherworldly amounts of extra power – although 510bhp and 420lb-ft is certainly nothing to be sniffed at. But it does add drama by way of an ear-bursting, brain-melting, grin-inducing crescendo of revs and one of the most recognisable top-end howls in motoring. When you get this mad little GT-come-hotrod on song, it’s addictive in a way few legal things are.

This example has been clinically cared for too. The service record is meticulous, the MOT record exemplary and the mileage stupidly low. The owner has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep it tip-top condition too, with ceramic coating, paint protection film and WaxOyl protecting just about every surface possible, inside, outside and underneath.

And we’ve not even mentioned the specification yet. Although, if you’ve even glanced at the photographs (and you really should), you’ll already know that  it’s a cracker. Not every car can pull off black-over-black, but this delicious slice of Gaydon greatness certainly does, with the silver wheels and red stitching offering punches of colour that elevate the styling even further.

Look, it’s arguably the prettiest Aston ever made, with an absolute peach of a V12, in near pristine condition, presented in a showstopping specification. Of course you want it, you’re not mad.

Summary

Every now and then we put a car through the auction that just makes all of us just stop and stare, jaws slack and not much being said. Just staring. This is definitely one of those cars.

It’s not just the incredibly stylish and beautifully resolved aesthetic. It’s not even the sonorous naturally aspirated V12. The condition is fantastic, but it’s not that either.

No, what’s possessing our minds is the totality of all those things. Very rarely do we see a car that ticks every box, that is pretty much universally admired – adored even – and that every staffer wanted to take home. Yet that’s what we have here, and it’s truly special.

We need to go and have a little lie down. We’ve been looking at pictures of this car for about two hours straight now and we’re starting to do the kind of man-maths that will get us in serious trouble…
