For sale is my R400 – it’s an amazing car in lovely condition that has evolved over the years since my late Father bought the car new 20 years ago. Like most Caterhams it’s led the life of a pampered big boys toy, always clean and kept under a cover in the garage, and what was a quick car off the shelf has developed further into a really quick car which is great on the road and competitive in the hillclimb and sprint roadgoing classes.

I’ve always thought of it as an R500 without the expense of regular rebuilds. As you can see from the spec it’s a properly sorted car that is equally at home blatting on your favourite B road as it is on hillclimbs and sprints – it also goes very well on the occasional trackday where you have to have something very special to go faster.

The spec list says it all, there’s not too much more you could ever want to do to it (perhaps a Scholar 1900cc bottom end?) but over and above that in more recent years I’ve had it looked after by a local specialist, trackvroad, for all the servicing, check ups and any niggles – and of course anything it needs it gets, recent works beyond servicing include new suspension and geo setup with fresh bushes and rose joints etc, it’s lovely and compliant as a 7 should be, at the same they replaced the stupid lithium battery with a Varley red top drycell amongst other things.

In summary I think an S3 chassis with a proper K series is peak Caterham and this is perhaps one of the ultimate versions of that 7 amazing both on road and track with the best version of the best engine you can have in one (controversial?) – it’s really clean and it goes and sounds fabulous!
