1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT – Appendix K

The motorsport halls of fame are lined with trophies adorned with the Alfa Romeo name. As a brand, Alfa dominated during the dawn of modern F1, catapulting drivers like Fangio and Farina into a life of fame. But it’s not just single-seater racing that Alfa focused on. Throughout the years, they’ve achieved success in F1, rally and touring cars.
This car started life as a road-going UK-supplied 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT. Finished in Grigio Chiaro, it was loved and enjoyed, and in spite of nearly 50 years of harsh British winters, it was in a remarkable state. The ideal candidate for a new lease on life as an FIA Appendix K race car.
Alfa Romeo Guru Titus Rowlandson was enlisted to take on the work. Retaining original floor panels, doors, bonnet, boot and boot floor and a host of other panels, it was carefully rebuilt to a better than new standard. During the work, in line with the requirements of the Appendix K specification, the right strengthening and mounting points were installed.
The car is finished to a standard much greater than the average racer. It remains in its original shade, but now features a host of trick parts. The original grill has made way for a GTA item, with a GTA centre heart and door handles, and now the car sits on a set of 15” TZ rims, which are wrapped in Vredestein tyres. It’s hard to convey the level of finish, the recent repaint and ceramic coating make for a car as worthy of a concourse as it is a trackday.
The finish quality extends to the interior, which is finished in a contrasting lighter grey. It’s a practical colour that is often used in race cars as it makes spotting stress cracks or fractures that much easier. The original seats are gone; instead, a set of Tillet racing bucket seats and 6-point harnesses.
The racey parts continue with a MOMO steering wheel and a pinpoint accurate STACK tachometer and oil pressure gauge. The car is controlled via a centrally mounted switch panel with a safety cutoff and a plumbed-in fire extinguisher. In the boot, there is an Alfaholics 55-litre foam-filled race fuel cell, which not only significantly improves safety but also stops the risk of fuel starvation during high-speed cornering.
The car uses an original 502 engine that was first built by Chris Whelan of WDL and subsequently rebuilt, and improved upon by Titus. The bottom end uses JE forged pistons, new liners and total seal rings, whilst the top end uses a ported big valve cylinder head and race cams. The whole rotating assembly, along with a lightweight flywheel and F&S clutch, has been balanced to ensure smoothness and reliability.
The engine breathes through Weber 45 carburettors and a stainless steel Alfaholics exhaust, and is kept in time by a 123 Ignition electronic distributor. The whole set-up is mated to a rebuilt 5-speed gearbox with a short-ratio 5th gear and produces circa 150bhp. The car sits with purpose thanks to a set of Koni Dampers, paired with Alfaholics race springs and a 29mm ARB.
The expert work has resulted in a road-legal, race-ready Alfa Romeo that is finished to concourse standards. Even if your choice is not to use this as a race car, it could be the ultimate fast road or track day toy.
As with all our vehicles, an entire digital folder is available upon request and contains more images, walk-around videos, and scans of the service history. The car can also be viewed by appointment at our West London showroom.
