Some cars are fast. Others are beautiful. A rare few are both—and then offer something more, something that lingers long after the drive. The Ferrari 296 GTS is one of those.
At its core is a 3.0-litre, 120-degree twin-turbo V6 pushing 654 horsepower. Pair it with the hybrid system, and output climbs to 819 bhp—enough for 0–62 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0–124 in 7.6, and a top speed beyond 205 mph, even with the roof down.
But the numbers tell only half of the story. Slip into E-Mode, and the 296 glides in near silence for up to 15 miles and can run at speeds up to 83mph (though not at the same time). Switch back, and the exhaust note snaps you back to reality: this is still very much a Ferrari.
A symmetrical cylinder firing order, equal-length tuned exhaust manifolds and an 8,500rpm red line mean that this Ferrari sounds like a Ferrari should: sonorous low down and rising to an operatic crescendo as the revs rise.
Few experiences rival lowering the roof of a Ferrari as the sun dips – in the 296 the retractable hardtop vanishes in 14 seconds while the engine’s song floods the cabin. It’s proof that the cliché is true—sometimes it’s not about the destination, but how unforgettable the journey is to get there.
The 296 GTS is more than beauty with brawn. Its sculpted body hides a carbon-reinforced chassis as rigid as the coupé’s, active aerodynamics generating up to 360 kg of downforce, and underbody wizardry that keeps it pinned at speed.
The result is a car with two distinct characters: docile, almost gentle at low speeds, yet alive and razor-sharp when unleashed. Whether gliding through the city or devouring a mountain pass, the GTS makes every drive feel extraordinary.
