The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S
The 722 S variant represents a particularly exclusive and performance-orientated further development of the SLR model series. Developed in close collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, the 722 S was originally presented in 2006 and subsequently also realised as a roadster. The focus here was on a further increase in performance, optimised aerodynamics and a chassis set-up that placed the vehicle much more in the realm of an uncompromising super sports car. At the heart of the 722 S was the supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine with a peak output of 650 hp. In conjunction with the special automatic gearbox, the car achieved impressive performance. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h was achieved in just 3.6 seconds, while the 300 km/h mark was reached after around 28 seconds. The top speed was 337 km/h, which was higher than the standard variants. These figures show the clear focus of the 722 S version on extreme driving dynamics and racetrack suitability. In addition to the increased engine power, the chassis was a central point of further development. Firmer springs and dampers noticeably increased driving stability, which was particularly evident in fast bends. Added to this were newly designed 19-inch forged aluminium wheels, which provided space for larger brake discs. This not only increased the braking power, but also improved the thermal resilience under high loads. The 722 S was also reworked in aerodynamic terms. New spoiler edges at the front and modified wheel spoilers ensured improved airflow and additional downforce. The modified position of the integrated air brake (Airbrake) optimised downforce at high speeds and at the same time increased safety when braking. In addition, the overall weight of the vehicle was reduced by around 44 kilograms, further increasing agility.
Visually, the 722 S stood out from the basic SLR with subtle but effective details. Characteristic features included red-painted brake callipers, which were visible through the filigree spoke rims, and the embossed ‘722’ signature on the headrests. These accents emphasised the sporty exclusivity of the vehicle without overstating the elegant appearance of the Gran Turismo. With the open-top version, which was available from 2008, Mercedes-Benz also transferred the enhanced dynamics of the 722 to the Roadster variant. The elaborate carbon monocoque structure was further developed to ensure high rigidity despite the retractable fabric top. As a result, the 722 S Roadster achieved driving performance at almost the same level as the Coupé: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h. This made it one of the fastest open-top vehicles of its time. Production of the 722 S was strictly limited. Only 150 units were built by hand at the McLaren factory in Woking. This limitation, combined with the enhanced technology and the clear focus on maximum driving performance, made the 722 S a coveted collector's item right from its launch. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 S is therefore far more than just a special edition. With its combination of innovative technology, aerodynamic improvements, consistent weight reduction and limited character, it is now regarded as one of the most fascinating models to emerge from the co-operation between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren.
About the vehicle offered here:
The story of this sensationally documented vehicle began on 10 October 2008, when the first and so far only owner received the order confirmation from Mercedes-Benz Munich. Ten days later, he paid the first part of the €521,000 new price with a down payment of €50,000. Six months later, on 29 April 2009, the first delivery took place at Mercedes-Benz in Munich. Prior to this, the SLR was first registered to the collector from the region on 3 April 2009. Over the following years, the vehicle was driven regularly, but never very much, and serviced according to regulations at Mercedes-Benz Munich. The documents consisting of over 250 pages document maintenance on the following dates:
