Description
I have had a love for this generation CL500 for a long time now. It started when I was a boy, just 14 years old and on the way to the Nürburgring with my Dad and Uncle in their Porsche 968 Sport. This was mid-summer 2002 during one of the hottest summers on record, and there I was, breached over the gearbox tunnel of a 968, with the sun beating down through the huge glass rear window, with no Air Con!
After being stuck on the Brussels ring road traffic jam for a couple of hours, it was eventually time for a coffee and fuel stop, which was when Robert, one of friends in the group, pulled into the fuel station in his then, brand new CL500.
I blagged a lift with Robert in what seemed to be the smoothest, and most importantly, coolest cars I’d ever had the pleasure of travelling in. It was dark metallic green with cream leather- pure luxury! That’s when the love affair started.
Ever since, I have kept an eye open in case a nice one turns up. It just so happens that one of my good friends, found this example with a local car dealer, and bought it. He enjoyed the car for a couple of years, and then decided to part exchange it with me for a motorbike.
Some things are just meant to be!
So, about the car. This example was bought originally by Fred the Shred, the man in charge of RBS at the time of the 2008 banking crisis! In the first couple of years, the car did the vast majority of its mileage, and allegedly once the banking businesses started to go downhill, he hid the car in his garage as he was so unpopular at the time, he was a target for vandalism.
By the end of 2008 the car had covered 23,000 miles meaning that in the time since, the car has been used sparingly, covering just another 7,000 miles.
It’s fair to say that I don’t think there is a better example in the country. The colour combination, the quality of the bodywork, the quality of the interior and the fact that every function on the car works perfectly.
What I also like about it is that in terms of its mechanical specification, this car has the early 300 BHP engine (which I prefer) but with the benefit of the later 7-speed gearbox, which makes the car more lively and economical.
On a recent trip to Wales, the car average nearly 30 mpg with ease.
I have just had the car fully inspected and serviced by Andy Gale Mercedes Specialists in the West Midlands, who gave the car a clean bill of health, and a new MOT with no advisories.
The car is only for sale as the funds may be required for another project in the near future, but it will be a bind to sell it!
