Overview

Along with the likes of the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R and Toyota Supra, Mazda's front-engined, rear-wheel drive RX-7 sports coupe has achieved almost mythical status. Not only for its compact and lightweight Wankel rotary engine, but for the insane amount of performance that can be gleaned from said engine.

Popularised by a certain Hollywood film that is both rapid and incensed, the Mazda RX-7 remains a favourite among JDM fans and big power tuners alike, but the car has actually been around in some form or another since 1978.

Any generation RX-7 is a worthy addition to anyone's garage but it's the more modern, rounded-body third iteration, known as the FD, that attracts the most attention, mainly due to the 1.3-litre 13B-REW twin-turbo twin-rotor Wankel engine under that long, sleek bonnet that can be tuned to deliver face-melting performance.

And that's exactly the fate that has befallen this particular 2000 final series example that was imported from Japan in 2018 on 62,758 miles with a 4B auction grade. Being the high-end "Type RS" model this RX-7 was already an improvement over the standard cars but it has since been modified and upgraded, including a fully professionally rebuilt engine with many upgraded parts, upping power to approximately 320bhp.

In addition, the drivetrain, suspension and braking components have all received an uplift and the car also benefits from myriad exterior improvements ensuring that it looks as good as it drives. With a spec list as long as your arm it's certainly been lavished with love, care and attention and currently represents a cracking, professionally tuned example that's quite impossible to ignore.

Summary

With such extensive but tasteful modifications this iconic Mazda RX-7 is one of the best we've seen in a while. With less than 4,000 miles covered since having the engine rebuilt by a reputable specialist and with a full running gear refurbishment on an excellent original example just over 1,000 miles ago, the higher maintenance toll associated with this type of vehicle has surely been drastically mitigated. The vendor believes that the car has to be seen in person to be appreciated and doubts there is a better one to be found anywhere in the UK. You best go and take a peek then...
