Description
It's an XJ, but not potentially as you know it. This is no Jaguar, instead it's an American automotive Icon. Jeep launched the XJ Cherokee back in 1984, with European backers Renault pushing AMC to develop a lighter, more efficient 4x4.
This continental pressure, though potentially not appreciated, resulted in AMC delivering a car over 500kgs lighter than its predecessor. The developments didn't stop with weight alone; the XJ became the first road-going production 4x4 to use a unibody construction. All this work firmly positioned the XJ as "The car that sparked America's love affair with the SUV"
Unlike many American cars, the XJ was sold in Europe. Just a year after its launch, European deliveries began, but it wouldn't arrive in a right-hand-drive form until 1993.
This particular car was supplied by Jewson Jeep in Oxford. Specified in Moss Green, it sits on a set of lattice-style polished face alloy wheels.
The Cherokee's origins are clear, with a signature upright Jeep grille and wide-boxy arches that prompt thoughts of WWII Willis Jeeps. As a Limited model, the car features silver-pin stripes and limited branding.
The interior features what Jeep describes as Charcoal cloth, though the seats do feature leather outer sections. The driver's seat shows wear, but the interior is in good condition overall. Wood trim adorns the dash and door cards, and the sound system has been upgraded with a period-correct-looking Blaupunkt Hamburg head unit, which adds DAB and Bluetooth functionality.
Jeeps are beloved for their rugged off-road capability, and the Cherokee is no exception. It utilises a 4.0-litre high-output version of Jeep's long-standing six-cylinder that produces 190 BHP and 225 lb-Ft of torque.
The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox that sends its power through a transfer case, allowing for high and low range ratios. The XJ sits on Dana axles, with a Quadra-link front suspension design that means, despite its toughness, it remains compliant on the road. It breathes through an upgraded Magnaflow cat-back exhaust system.
The car has covered just over 85,000 miles from new, and has had just three owners. Those owners have maintained this car to an extremely high standard, both within the Jeep main-dealer network and with specialists throughout the country.
In late 2024, over £2,000 was spent with Grease Monkeys in Hertfordshire, bringing the mechanical aspects of this Jeep up to scratch. The work included replacing the rear dampers, brakes and a full service.
Then, in July of 2025, the car was sent to HX Motors in Maidstone, who ice blasted the underside, clearing off years of dirt to address some underside corrosion. The subsequent welding work and re-undersealing totalled just under £5,000. Now, this remains a fine example of an XJ Cherokee, a four-wheeled star-spangled banner of a car. Comfortable, capable and effortlessly cool.
As with all our vehicles, an entire digital folder is available upon request and contains more images, walk-around videos, and scans of the service history. The car can also be viewed by appointment at our West London showroom.
