Hexagon Classics are delighted to offer this super version of the rare Porsche 911 2.4S Targa. For a fraction of the market value of its racing stable mate, the 2.7RS, this is a top of the range 911 2.4S offering incredible value. With just 2 keepers from new, this is a prime matching numbers and original paint colour example of an F series Porsche that deserves serious collectors’ interest. With huge recent expenditure by its second keeper, this 2.4S Targa looks every inch the classic 911.
For 1972 Porsche increased the 911’s engine size to 2,341cc (more commonly known as the 2.4), by increasing the stroke from 66mm to 70.4 mm. Forged crankshafts were also used, the con rods were shortened by 2.2 mm and the big ends increased in width. The design of the lightened rods had been proven in the Le Mans-winning 917’s flat-12 racing engine. With its revised 8.5:1 compression ratio engine power rose to 190 hp at 6,500 rpm and torque was an impressive 158 lb/ft at 4,000 rpm.
Koni shock absorbers were also standard equipment for the top-of-the-range S model, along with new 15mm front and rear anti-roll bars, and a new steel front spoiler which reduced lift from 183lb to 102lb. The new 915/02 5-speed gearbox had a greater torque capacity and was much easier to use.
The 911 2.4S Targa was originally supplied new by Autohaus Porsche Audi, Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1973. Our car also comes complete with invoices chronicling the recent maintenance. TLG Auto in CA carried out the extensive mechanical recommissioning works which included an engine and transmission-out service and a new clutch unit. After arriving in the UK in 2023, the Targa had a professional back-to metal strip and repaint, then Centre Gravity of Atherstone performed a full suspension set up, including new Bilstein shock absorbers, wheel bearings, Lemforder Turbo tie rod kit, anti-roll bars, and Michelin XWX tyre set. It therefore presents in wonderful condition.
