Overview
Buying a second hand Mazda MX-5 is never a bad idea. Whether you're craving a bit of weekend track action, some spirited B-road fun or just an honest to goodness, downright excellent little two seater sports car, owning and driving Mazda's perennially popular roadster just makes sense.
And the sheer amount of models out there means choosing one that's right for you couldn't be simpler. In production for going on 40 years now the MX-5 has been constantly developed; from the original and arguably purest NA back in '89 through to the current fourth generation ND, the mighty Mazda has been a stalwart of the affordable, reliable sports car scene since its inception.
But it's the third-gen NC that we reckon could be the Goldilocks MX-5. Bridging the gap between the fully old school early cars and the more technologically enhanced modern models, the NC – produced between 2005 and 2015 – is a more refined yet still hugely enjoyable option when it comes to these inherently drivable machines. There's a reason it won Japan's Car of the Year award upon its release.
This particularly special 2009 example comes to market in excellent condition throughout, resplendent in a rather fetching dark blue with Mazdaspeed decals and ‘Smoked Chrome’ wheels, but it's underneath where this car truly shines.
Not only is it the post-2008 facelift 'Sport Tech' model, which came with the 2.0-litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox along with a host of additional upgrades including 17" alloy wheels, heated leather seats, front fog lights, a limited slip differential, front strut brace, BOSE stereo and climate and cruise control, but this MX-5 has been further enhanced by the BBR Super 180 conversion, carried out by BBR GTi and giving a boost in power to 185bhp.
A full, £3,000 stainless exhaust system with BBR exhaust centre section (with cat) and a Goodwin Racing Super Q rear silencer with removable baffles has also been fitted and in March 2024 the original Bilstein suspension was replaced with all new fully adjustable Koni Sport suspension and Progress Technology springs. This lowers the car sympathetically by approximately 1”, improving stance and handling.
The interior has been treated to a plethora of tasteful after market upgrades too, resulting in a really rather special and unique MX-5 that has been elevated head and shoulders above the crowd, and the full spec is listed below. We’re sure you’ll agree that it’s very tasty!

Summary
It's safe to say that Mazda got it bang on once again with the third, NC generation MX-5 but there's always room for improvement as this particular example proves. With improved performance care of the BBR Super 180 kit, uprated suspension and brakes, an enhanced interior and some nice external touches the car has been tastefully upgraded to provide a sharper, more exciting experience without compromising what made it such a great drive in the first place.
