Description

Introduction
Peugeot introduced the 106 as its new small car in 1990 where it sold alongside the established and much loved 205. At the time the GTI badge was reserved for the 205, but demand for a hot version of the 106 was strong and the 1.4 XSi was launched for 1992. However, Peugeot Talbot Sport were also looking for a successor to the 205 Rallye that had been built to compete in Group N Rally. The class required a smaller engine capacity than that of the 106 XSi and so Peugeot Talbot Sport developed a unique variation of the popular and revvy TU engine.
Using an Aluminium block, unique manifold design, modified high compression head, high lift cam and Magneti Marelli injection, a new 1294cc 100 bhp unit was engineered and paired with a short ratio 5-speed manual gearbox. With peak torque at 5400rpm, and a red line at a screaming 7000rpm, the Rallye quickly became known for its raw, fizzy and exiting driving experience. In accordance with the rules of the sport, this new engine needed to be homologated and in 1993, the 106 Rallye was officially introduced to the UK market, limited to 1000 examples.
It wasn’t only the engine that was unique. The Rallye received additional metal within its monocoque body to stiffen it up, and to provide mounting points for a roll cage. Everything else focused on subtracting weight. Reduced door cars, less sound proofing, and much lower equipment levels inside meant that the Rallye tipped the scales at a minuscule 825kg. Externally, unsprung weight was reduced with a set of 14-inch Michelin steel wheels, finished in white. Side stripes and a bonnet flash in the PTS colours were added and the Rallye wore the sporty bumpers from the XSi complete with red inserts, although the fog lamps were also deleted. Only 2 factory optional extras were available; a manual winding tilt/slide sunroof, and ABS. Our car got the sunroof, but no ABS. While most Rallye's were finished in Bianca White, Cherry red and Black were also offered, with Black being the rarest of the colour ways.
Description
This particular car was supplied new by Rootes Peugeot in Maidstone, and first registered on 9th October 1995 to Miss Kerry Bailey. The paperwork with the car includes a brochure and the buyers notes made during her initial enquiries. It suggests that she had an offer of £2,200 for the part exchange of her Renault 5 GT Turbo, so this was clearly a purchase for seasoned hot hatchback fan.
Under its first owner the Rallye covered a well maintained 60,000 miles until 2013 when ownership of the Rallye moved to Mr Ben Underhill, Miss Bailey's Nephew. He kept his aunt’s Rallye for a further 6 years, adding around 3,000 miles to the Odometer. Around 2017 the car was resprayed to resolve a common issue of flaking lacquer. Mr Underhill then took the decision to sell the 106 in order to fund the restoration of his own Vauxhall Nova.
Its third owner, another hot hatch enthusiast, Elliot Dunn purchased the car in 2019. It had been a dream to own a Rallye as a teenager, but at the time the hot 106s were almost uninsurable for younger drivers. 20 years later, and spotting the opportunity to finally own a Rallye, Elliot sold his MINI Cooper S GP and finally welcomed the 106 Rallye he’d always wanted to his garage. During his ownership, the cars exemplary maintenance record has been continued, with the Rallye benefiting from regular oil changes, suspension refresh, new brakes and refurbished brake calipers, re-powder coated wheels and a machine polish.
The car made a continental trip to LeMans Classic in 2023 to celebrate 100 years of LeMans. It has also been displayed at the NEC classic motor show, won Best 106 during celebrations of Club Peugeot’s 40th anniversary, and has featured several times (including on the cover) of Practical Classics Magazine.
Given that many Rallye’s were used in motor sport or treated unsympathetically due to their low value in the past, not many survive in this condition. Far fewer survive with the low mileage and detailed history available with our example.
The history file includes every MOT certificate right back to the first one in 1998 and loose invoices from 2013 to date, with earlier history documented in the original Service Book along with its Handbook, Wallet and 2 keys.
