1987 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

This 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been beautifully and lovingly restored to near-new condition. It is finished in gleaming Monza Blue Metallic which was only available on this model in 1987 and 1988, so it’s a rare shade.

The car has been treated to a full restoration over four years. The body was stripped back to a bare-metal shell, before new sills front wings, boot lid rear wheel arches, battery tray and rear panel were welded in. The body was then repainted in the original colour, inside and out, to an incredibly high standard. New rubber seals were fitted throughout and all reusable parts were either vapour-blasted or sand-blasted and powdercoated, or stripped and plated, right down to the last nut and bolt.

The engine was also fully rebuilt. The engine was treated to new bearings, the cylinder head was professionally reconditioned, and new water pump, alternator, starter motor and distributor were fitted, along with a new clutch, washer bottle, coolant tank, battery, radiator, fuel lines and much more. A Jetex stainless steel exhaust system looks and sounds great.

The suspension was fully refreshed, with new dampers, springs and bushes all round, using a KW 40mm lowering kit. This car didn’t have power steering, although it was an option with this model, so a genuine power steering system was sourced and fitted. New brake discs, pads, calipers, pipes and hoses were also fitted. 16-inch BBS-style wheels are a departure from the original but certainly look the part.

Inside, the original carpets were cleaned and refitted, over all-new sound-deadening. Original ‘rainbow’ seats and door cards in excellent condition were sourced from another car. A new heater matrix was fitted, together with heater control cables. A Mototipo steering wheel is a nice touch, as is a modern Blaupunkt Madrid 200BT head unit looks period but adds modern Bluetooth connectivity. The car has an original, hand-operated steel sunroof.

Every part fitted to the car has been painstakingly documented on a spreadsheet and we have dozens of photographs detailing the work.

The labour of love restoration was finished in 2024 and the car has since been loved and cherished by the same owner for 7000 miles.
