1991 SAAB 900

motodrome offer for sale the ultimate in classic SAAB 900's - a 1991 turbo 16 3-door Carlsson.

The Carlsson was produced 1990-92 in limited numbers (around 200 per year) for the UK market, in honour of the SAAB rally driver Erik Carlsson, and all but the very last few were only available in Red, White, or Black. The few that are left rarely come to market.

All were 3-door hatches, had the distinctive body-coloured Airflow body kit, whaletail rear spoiler, the red APC meaning 185bhp, the heavy-duty ‘Type 9 gearset, twin exhausts, uprated suspension, and Carlsson steering wheel, body stripes, and tailgate script.

This one is also fitted with the optional full leather trim (with alcantara inserts in the front seats), working electric sunroof, ABS, and a more modern stereo. It’s also fitted with a dog guard and boot liner, although both are removeable.

These cars can be faked, especially as they were very rarely registered as Carlssons when new. This one however has the all important SAAB Great Britain documentation in the service book showing model type ‘900T Carlsson’, meaning it’s 100% genuine.

This one has covered 261000 miles, but if you know these cars you’ll know this isn’t much of an issue as they’re capable of starship miles. However, by 2013 and 231000 miles, it was both bodily very tired, and the engine was using too much oil.

The then owner commissioned an extremely comprehensive restoration by Peter Shelton, where the car was completely stripped and rebuilt from the ground up, and we have a DVD with over 500 photos detailing the whole process. A lower mileage engine block was sourced, and built back up with the original head which was deemed to be in good shape, with new gaskets and seals etc.

A reconditioned gearbox was fitted at 236000 miles.

It both looks superb and performs very strongly on the road with that distinctive SAAB turbo whistle, and gets admiring glances wherever it goes. The last owner, a fastidious enthusiast and well-known to us, drove it 300 miles down to us.

An utterly characterful car, and rare as hens teeth, from the days when SAAB did things just that little bit differently.

It also comes with the full book pack including original service book stamped up to 192k and some SAAB promo material including the rare 1990 Carlsson brochure, and lots of bills.
