Overview

Bentley never quite expected the Continental GT to be such a sales hit, such as the case that they were playing ‘catch up’ with orders for a good few years after launch, and when they knew that they had a winning product on their hands, thoughts turned towards building limited-run performance versions, playing on the rich Bentley motorsport heritage.

The first of these was the Continental GT Speed - introduced in 2008 - which steered the ship towards performance, with 600bhp on-tap and a revised chassis, but this paled in comparison to what we have here - the Supersports. With a name taken from Bentley’s early days of performance (the original 1925 Supersports was the race version of the iconic 3-litre) it was clear that they weren’t playing around. If the Speed was considered an upgrade, then the Supersports was in a whole new league.

Yes, the power output was higher than the Speed - circa 30bhp more - but it was everything else that really caught the attention of the press. A revised chassis, redesigned front end, stiffer suspension, removal of the rear seats, and a top speed of 206mph, all wrapped up in a sea of carbon fibre and quilted leather.

This particular SS - a magazine-featured example, no less - has been in the care of the current owner for six years. During this time it has been used and enjoyed, and other than a remote actuator for the exhaust valve being fitted (the standard Bentley item opens/closes automatically) and CarPlay integration the car remains as Bentley intended, which is exactly how it should be.

Interior

  • Luxurious Bentley interior in excellent shape, with numerous Supersports-only touches and features

  • The carbon-fibre bucket seats are the same as those found in the legendary Veyron

  • In the rear, the passenger seats have been deleted and replaced with a luggage area and Carbon strut brace, which was a large part of the 110kg weight saving compared to the standard Continental GT

  • Extensive carbon interior trim

  • Both bucket seats look to be in fine fettle, with no signs of any untoward wear or damage

  • The edges of the floor mats show some areas of wear

  • An auxiliary CarPlay/Android Auto screen has been fitted to the upper dashboard, but is reportedly easily removed

  • We note some patination to the steering wheel leather

  • Overall, an incredibly well-kept interior that belies the car’s age and mileage

Exterior

  • Quartzite exterior in great condition, with further model-specific features to make the Supersports stand out

  • The rear arches are flared 50mm compared to the standard Continental GT, the front end features additional air intakes and cooling vents for the engine, and the rear spoiler features an additional lip

  • The wheels are Supersports-specific 20” forged items, which present well but have a number of touched-in kerb marks

  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres all-round, which were fitted in 2024 and have reportedly covered around 2,000 miles

  • The front end and exposed edges show the usual smattering of stone chips, which are to be expected on a performance car of this age

  • We note a small area of lacquer damage on the upper offside edge of the front panel / grille surround, a scuff on the nearside mirror cap and a scratch on the lower nearside rear bumper corner

  • Elsewhere, there are touched-in chips on the rear edge of the front arches and a scuff on the leading edge of the driver’s door lower corner

  • A well-kept example of the limited-run Supersports that presents very well overall with some light age-related wear, commensurate for a car of this age and mileage

Mechanical

  • 6-litre turbocharged Bentley W12 engine, producing 621bhp and 800nm of torque

  • 0-62 can be completed in just under 4 seconds

  • Top speed of 206mph

  • Six-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to all four wheels with a 60:40 split rear bias

  • The gearbox was upgraded for the Supersports, giving 50% quicker gear changes and double down-shifts

  • Altered chassis geometry for improved handling and composure, with thicker anti-roll bars and a 50mm wider rear track

  • Quicker ratio steering rack

  • 1L oil in Bentley bag included
  • Uprated suspension bushes and springs

  • Adaptive dampers

  • Carbon ceramic brakes

  • A remote exhaust valve system has been fitted, allowing manual override of the factory valved exhaust from a fob on the keys

  • Reported to be in great health, with no outstanding issues and a recent main battery replacement

Summary

Just about the closest thing you can get to strapping a luxurious seat to an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Continental GT Supersports blends opulent Bentley luxury and design with physics-defying performance and handling. With praise from both motoring journalists and old salts alike - there is a great video of Derek Bell taking a similar-spec Supersports around the Nurburgring available on YouTube - the Supersports is a true modern classic, and a must for any Bentley enthusiast.
