Overview

Whilst some harbour an ill will towards the polarising Porsche 928, it’s fair to say that as the 928 has come of age, so has its fan base; once Porsche enthusiasts realised the 928 was never going to replace the 911 (as was the original intention) they have realised that it is a Porsche with its own unique characteristics and charm, and an effortless long-distance GT car with a wonderful V8 engine.

Of the 928s, the limited-run GT was arguably one of the most desirable. Designed as the runout for the 5.0-litre V8 engine, just 225 were registered in the UK from new according to SMMT, making this a very desirable car for the Porsche collector. Add in the fact that this example is believed to have a factory-fitted GTS body kit (more on that later) and you may well be looking at somewhat of a German unicorn.

While we have not been able to definitively verify the situation, our research indicates that only 17 were officially delivered with such an option, code XK8. Interestingly, it would also seem that this was a “special wishes” option that could not be ordered by just any old punter, and was apparently reserved for the Porsche elite such as factory racing drivers.

Whether it had a special first owner or not, this particular example has been in the care of the current owner since 2007, during which time it has been used and enjoyed, with a well-documented history and extensive works carried out in 2019 to a cost of circa £25,000. The bodywork and aesthetics need some TLC, but this means that you have a blank slate to make this 928 GT as you wish, whether you’ll go down the sympathetic restoration route, use it as-is, or take it back to factory standard with a full restoration. The choice is yours, if you bid successfully…

History and documentation

  • Registered 02 May 1989

  • Purchased by the current owner from PistonHeads (where else would you buy a car?!) in 2007

  • Circa 22,000 miles covered in current ownership

  • Organised history from both the current and former owner contained in a well-stocked ring binder

  • Collection of invoices and old MOT certificates

  • Two keys

  • Current MOT with no advisories expires 30 Oct 2026

  • V5 present in owner’s name

  • Whilst a number of modifications have been made to this 928, the seller has retained the original parts (such as the exhaust) meaning the next owner could return it to standard if they so wish

  • Recommissioning carried out by 928Spares in 2019 following a fire in the engine bay caused by a leaking fuel injector, at a cost of almost £25,000

  • Works above included welding to the underside, a major service, cambelt replacement, rectification of any fire damage, new injectors, new fuel rail, rebuild of the brake calipers, replacement of the aux belts, new brake discs and pads, replacement of all fuel pipes and rails throughout the car, and extensive other works

  • Reconditioned steering rack fitted in 2008

  • MAF sensor rebuilt by John Speake of JDS Porsche in 2011

  • ECU refurbished in 2017, also by John Speake

Interior

  • Black leather interior

  • Factory sunroof

  • The dashboard upper section has cracked

  • The original steering wheel has been replaced with a MOMO item which is now heavily worn, but the original item has been retained

  • We note that the driver’s seat requires repairs to the outer bolster and the upper right-hand edge

  • Elsewhere, the leather armrest is showing its age, there is a general age-related patination to the interior, and the rear end of the roof lining has slightly deformed

  • Audison 340W Power Amp installed with upgraded Blaupunkt speakers throughout, and an aftermarket Pioneer stereo unit

  • The sunroof appears to be working correctly

  • We’re told that the tailgate panel requires attention, and that a few of the doorcard clips have gone awol

  • Spare wheel, inflator kit and partial tool kit present

  • The seller reports that the driver’s window switch has recently stopped working, but there are otherwise no known electrical faults

Exterior

  • 928 GT supplied with what is believed to be a factory-fitted GTS body kit, with flared arches

  • Supporting evidence for the kit being factory fitted came when a mirror replacement was required, resulting in the use of the PET catalogue (Porsche Ersatz Teile) to suggest the correct GTS tear-drop mirror, rather than the squared-off GT item based upon the car’s VIN

  • Although the option code is not formally recorded against the car, further evidence of factory fitment came when a replacement front wing was required and the correct flared GTS-style item was supplied

  • Genuine BBS 18” split alloy wheels, LM144 on the rear, and LM0000 on the front

  • The paintwork is in generally poor condition, with extensive areas of fading, bubbling, lacquer peel and larger stone chips and blemishes

  • A respray would bring this car back to its best, or it could be left as-is for those that enjoy the ‘patinated’ appearance

  • The rear nearside wing has a large hole in aft of the rear wheel

  • We note some impact damage to the offside of the front registration plate (which is mounted on custom-made supports, fabricated and installed by the seller)

  • Pop-up headlights in full working order

  • All four of the BBS wheels require refurbishment, but given the desirability of these LM wheels, it would be money well spent

  • The underside is reported to be in good condition, on account of the significant expenditure in recent years, and the historic application of Waxoyl shortly after purchase

Mechanical

  • 4,957cc naturally-aspirated V8 engine producing 330bhp from factory

  • Five-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the rear wheels through a factory-fitted limited-slip differential

  • The braking system was extensively overhauled in 2019

  • The seller reports a rare fault where the brake pedal appears to lose pressure and activate only at the extremity of its travel, but this has happened only a handful of times in his ownership and it hasn’t been possible to replicate the fault for further investigation

  • With regards to the above, the seller also notes that no braking-related issues were noted on the recent (advisory free) MOT exam which took place in October 2025

  • A new clutch and thrust bearings were fitted (with other related sundry parts), and the underside was Waxoyled shortly after purchase, in around 2008-9

  • The seller reports that the steering rack has been refurbished
  • The torque tube - a common 928 foible - has been addressed, and the seller also reports that the gearbox main bearing was replaced at around 50,000 miles

  • Rear muffler bypass fitted - makes the most of the V8 noise without being over-the-top

  • Bilstein fully-adjustable suspension

  • Other than the above braking foible, there are no other reported faults

Summary

Rare enough in standard form and seemingly as rare as rocking horse waste with its GTS body kit, this is a 928 GT that needs some TLC to bring it back to its best, but appears to have good mechanical underpinnings, backed up by a recent clean MOT exam. One for the collector to save, or for those that enjoy nothing more than a healthy dose of genuine patina!
