Overview
The likes of the Renault 5 Alpine (or Gordini for us Brits) and Simca 1100TI may pre-date the Golf GTI but it was Volkswagen's seminal pocket rocket that helped popularise the whole hot hatch phenomenon back in the '70s and the company has kept its toes in those particularly choppy waters ever since.
Light and peppy, the original Golf GTI could keep up with much more potent, and indeed expensive fare both off the lights and on the twisties with enough room for four adults and all their luggage, plus a dog or two. It was all the car one could possibly need and VW is still churning them out to this day with the GTI now onto its eighth generation.
With so many iterations to choose from then it can be difficult to know which to go for but a good bet for many is the fifth-gen GTI that was produced between 2004 and 2008. It may have grown somewhat since the 1976 original but so too has its capabilities, eschewing that initial naturally aspirated 1.6 four-cylinder for a much more performance-oriented 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four with trick Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) technology producing around 200bhp.
Available with either three or five doors and a choice of either a six-speed manual or DSG auto there was some scope for customisability to suit and it was another successful outing for the iconic hatchback, with Automobile Magazine crowning the 2007 Mk5 GTI as Automobile of the Year.
And that's exactly what we have available here – a 2007 Mk5 Volkswagen Golf GTI. This isn't your boggo GTI though. This is the Edition 30 model, a limited production special built to commemorate the GTI's 30th anniversary that's chock full of features. Available in six colours the cars were fitted with a different forged engine and K04 turbo that bumped power to 230bhp which closed the gap between the GTI and the R32, with a 0-60mph time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 152mph..
Styling wise the cars featured body-coloured side skirts and rear bumper, a Votex front spoiler, and sexy tinted rear lights. On the inside the iconic golf ball shaped gear knob made a welcome return and special silver Edition 30 sill plates were fitted, along with Edition 30 seats and steering wheel. A choice of special edition wheels completed the package.
In excellent condition both inside and out and with impressive service history this particular example is reportedly in rude health. A rare but inherently usable car with a manual gearbox it looks great in Tornado Red with gun metal BBS wheels and is ready for its next lucky owner.
