The final evolution of Horacio Pagani’s original design for the Zonda, the C12 S 7.3 represented the original model, per the 1999 Geneva Motor Show launch, at its zenith. A process of iterations over 4 years, the S 7.3 still retained the purity of the 90s concept whilst being powered by the largest capacity version of Mercedes-Benz’s legendary M120 V-12 engine in AMG-tuned 7,291 cc form. The use of the M120 engine was a stroke of genius by Pagani, placing one of the finest Motorsport-proven V-12 engines ever into a unique lightweight chassis, clothed in a stunning body with an abundance of Italian flair. Ultimately, the Zonda would be transformed for the F version, before being further evolved with special editions and customer-specification 760 variants.
Chassis number 31 was delivered new in March 2003 as one of only eight examples of the S 7.3 Coupé completed in right-hand-drive. Specified in similar colours to the prototype, which is now retained in Horacio Pagani’s personal collection, chassis 31 was finished in the stunning Zonda Blue over a Blue and Beige leather interior complemented by matching Blue carpeting. Registered in the UK by its first owner in October 2003, it was purchased on the agreement with Pagani that it could be available for press duties, something of huge importance for the small artisanal car company, then producing around 10 cars per year. Of note, it featured in CAR magazine, whilst making an appearance with Jeremy Clarkson. This Zonda was selected by EVO magazine for its 100th issue test where it was tested against 9 other cars, all nominated as the greatest driver’s cars ever including the McLaren F1, Porsche 911 2.7 RS, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F40 and Lancia Delta Integrale.
Whilst in the first owner’s care, he enjoyed this Zonda on several ‘Vanishing Point’ tours, organised by the factory and now better known as Pagani’s Raduno tours. As shown by stamps in the service book, this Zonda was initially maintained by the factory, whilst minor servicing was carried out by the local Mercedes-Benz official dealer.
In February 2011, it joined the collection of the second and current owner. Remarkably, it moved just over 3 miles to its new home as the car was well-known locally, so it was sold directly between the two owners. Shortly after acquisition, it dawned on the current owner that it needed an experienced approach to maintenance so as a long-term client of Bob Houghton it was entrusted to the highly regarded Ferrari specialist. After a few years, Pagani recognised that a service network was required so Pagani UK was established, and this Zonda was given a major service in 2016 prior to its use on the 2016 Pagani Raduno. A year later, the fuel tank was replaced with an official Pagani item, dated to 4th April 2017 (expiry April 2027). The last service was carried out by Pagani UK in January 2024 for a total cost of £16,075, with all fluids, filters, spark plugs and tyres replaced, amongst other service items. Usefully, a set of almost indistinguishable OZ Superleggera 19” wheels were purchased for the car due to the difficulty of getting tyres for the original 18” set (which remain with the car).
Enjoyed enthusiastically by the current owner since 2011, this Zonda has made various appearances at events around the UK including the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court, Wilton House Classic and Supercar Show, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. At the 2024 Cartier Style et Luxe Concours at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this special Zonda was awarded Best-in-Class for the 25 Years of the Pagani Zonda class, beating 5 other examples of different varieties to the honours—the judges were swayed by its outstanding originality and stunning specification. Aside from car shows, this Zonda has been used as intended by its creator for trips across the continent. As previously mentioned, it took part in the 2016 Pagani Raduno around the Dolomites, and it was believed to be the only car taking part to be driven to and from the event by its owner, something only possible with the use of its original fitted luggage and suit carrier.
Importantly, right-hand-drive Zondas are able to be converted to left-hand-drive without permanent alteration to the chassis whereas left-hand-drive chassis do not allow for this conversion. Additionally, as this Zonda is over 20 years old, it is no longer subject to USA EPA emissions regulations, meaning that import into the USA is far simpler with it only needing to be brought in under NHTSA Show or Display exemption.
Offered for the first time in 14 years from the collection of its second owner, this incredible example of Pagani’s haloed Zonda displays 49,634km (30,841 miles) on its odometer, a figure regarded as ‘running in’ mileage by Mercedes-Benz for its durable M120 engine. One of just 17 S 7.3 Coupés to leave the factory, it is believed that only six examples worldwide, including chassis 31, remain completely original, unmodified, undamaged and in their delivery specification. This incredible UK-registered example is complemented by its original luggage, suit carrier, car cover, tools, service book, owner’s manual and a history file. As originality becomes more important in the collector car market, chassis 31’s unmodified condition and stunning specification makes it an increasingly enticing prospect. Lovingly cherished by the current owner, sharing garage space with an eclectic group of cars, this wonderful Zonda is ready to join another great collection.
