It was founded by a wealthy Fort Lauderdale resident, George Levin who bought the firm and immediately unleashed a marketing blitz for CMC and orders poured in so fast that the company abandoned its modest Hallandale headquarters and moved to the mammoth warehouse on the Palmetto Interstate and 27th Avenue, Miami. This place was huge - 160,000 square feet of car heaven. It had a 45 foot steel tower with a rotating platform that displayed cars and anyone driving down this Miami highway could not fail to miss this impressive dealership. Automobili Intermeccanica in Santa Ana, California were the largest manufacturer of Speedster Kits but their Speedster project was sold to Classic Motor Carriages in 1979 and they became the largest Speedster replica manufacturer. Known for its fibreglass replicas of classic models like the Porsche 356 Speedster, Mercedes-Benz SSK, Tiffany's and Cobra's, CMC was once the largest of its kind in the United States with many of their cars displayed in Airport lobbies across the USA from Newark to Seattle. The CMC (Classic Motor Carriages) Speedster is a fibreglass bodied Porsche 356 replica built on a shortened Volkswagen Beetle chassis and featuring air-cooled flat-four engines (commonly 1600cc) and a 4-speed manual transaxle, rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension, Front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, 15-inch chrome wheels, Bucket Seats, and VDO gauges and it was generally regarded as capable of highway speeds in excess of 80 mph. This CMC Speedster was built using a 1973 VW Beetle as its donor car and upon completion, it was registered in Florida, USA on 7th September 1994. Little is known of its history in the USA before it was imported to the UK from Florida and first registered here on December 21st 2005. The current lady owner purchased the car back in 2017, but unfortunately she has mislaid some of history file during a recent house move, but we hope this will resurface soon. After being in storage for a couple of years, it has recently undergone some impressive updates, including a brand-new Tan Leather interior and a Blue Mohair Soft Top, both professionally fitted by well-known coach-trimmers Strong & Turton in Langley, Buckinghamshire at a cost of £3,750. Additionally, it was given to specialists Terry’s Beetles in Boston Manor, London, and fully serviced and recommissioned at a cost of a further £3,291.79. The car is finished in a striking Ivory White with Tan Leather seats and Tan trim panels, a new set of Navy Blue carpets, a new Blue Mohair Soft Top, Wooden Mota-Lita Steering Wheel, 1600cc VW engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox and sitting on a set of 15'' Chrome Wheels with chrome hub caps. This Speedster not only looks stunning but drives beautifully and it is in lovely condition throughout and really only requires some minor cosmetic improvements. It is of course registered as an Historic Vehicle, making it exempt from both MOT and Road Tax, and it is ULEZ exempt as well. Prior to delivery, the car will be given a new MOT (although exempt) and come with our own 6 month standard mechanical Warranty. NB: Please note that this car is now fitted with a wooden Mota-Lita Steering wheel in place of the VW Steering Wheel shown in the photographs.
