Overview

Dating back to the absolutely sublime 300 in 1954 Mercedes-Benz to this day continues to produce its legendary SL model, now on to its seventh generation. Perennially popular and a trend-setter throughout every iteration, the SL class GT continues to impress and pave the way for those that crave insane amounts of performance combined with an impressive level of comfort required for long-distance motoring.

Pick a Mercedes SL from any decade and you'll be pleased as punch and it would be a decision we wholeheartedly support but it's the sixth generation that has piqued our interest today. Handsome, brutally fast, especially when equipped with the larger V8 and V12 turbocharged engines, and loaded with tech, the Mercedes-Benz SL produced from 2012 to 2020 is an excellent choice when it comes to these raucous roadsters.

Although larger than the outgoing model, the sixth-gen SL was actually lighter, due in part to being made almost entirely from aluminium (including the space frame chassis) and performance was impressive across all engine types but it's unsurprisingly the AMG versions that really shine and this 2013 SL63 AMG is particularly impressive.

Featuring a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 delivering a gargantuan 530bhp to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential (now standard) and a seven-speed MCT automatic gearbox, the SL63 AMG can get to 60mph from standstill in a smidge over four seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. Yes, it's still a bit of a heavyweight (that trick folding hard top is a little hefty) but the sheer brute force of that V8 soon has you reaching for the brake pedal before it all gets  a little too blurry. That's not to say it can't cruise too though, far from it. The SL is an incredibly comfortable place to be when you simply need to eat up the miles without having to switch to Def Con 1.

Coming to market in great condition throughout the car has recently been serviced and has also had the rear subframe replaced under warranty, evincing this car's meticulously maintained nature, having wanted for nothing. Complete with impressive documented service history and a long MOT this low mileage SL is a bit of a cracker and ready to go. It looks great, reportedly drives very well and let's be honest, the sound of that glorious V8 is worth the price of admission alone.

Summary

If you're after a sporty GT that not only looks great but goes like stink and sounds better than almost anything else you're likely to come across then this Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG is definitely well worth considering. Well-designed and well-built with a level of comfort and refinement that is honestly difficult to match there's a lot going for it. Add in the car's impressive service history and low mileage into the mix and it quickly becomes very difficult to ignore.
