Overview
When the Porsche Cayman came along at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, it stopped a few people in their tracks.
Here, at last, was an affordable small Porsche coupé, created in the mould of the original 911 and almost as delicate – a sports car as opposed to a supercar, and in some ways more aligned with the original 911 than the model that bore the legendary name.
Smaller, lighter, cheaper and equally as agile, the tin-top version of the second-generation Boxster was a car blessed with phenomenal handling, a beguiling flat-six soundtrack and stunning styling.
Whatever your budget, the Cayman delivers one of the most incisive drives of all time. Its mid-engined layout gives it terrific balance, while the naturally aspirated flat-six engines deliver decent punch with an endearing soundtrack. They’re even quite practical, with a large front boot and additional luggage space under the rear hatch.
This one is one of the last 987s made – known as a 987.2 and equipped with a second-generation engine that’s regarded by many as more reliable than on early cars – certainly, they don’t suffer from the intermediate shaft bearings issues found on some earlier cars. This one has the 2.9-litre unit, good for 265bhp and 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds, with power fed to its rear wheels via the sought-after six-speed manual transmission.
The vendor bought it as a trip down Memory Lane, as he owned an early Cayman when they were new cars. He’s loved having it, but plans to expand his business mean that he wants to move it on now he’s relived the experience.
It’s a well-maintained car, with 92,000 miles on the clock and a decent maintenance history, while it presents in superb condition with no obvious blemishes. It’s a great example of one of the best driver’s cars ever made – an opportunity not to pass up.

Summary
With incredible poise and agility, terrific handling and an addictive soundtrack, the Cayman is a hard car to beat in terms of driver appeal. It feels well-made, too, and in 987.2 form is regarded as one of the most dependable sports cars of its era.
If you want a mini-911, then this one – a run-out car with all the toys – is a prospect not to be overlooked. It’s in fabulous condition inside and out, and the colour scheme really suits it. We love it.
