For those hankering after a beautifully balanced mid-engined roadster that's incredibly easy to pilot, making all but the most ham-fisted of drivers appear Senna like in their mastery of the motor car, they needn't look any further than the second generation Porsche Boxster 987.

Replacing the original Boxster 986 in 2004 – a hugely popular and unequivocally capable car in its own right – the 987 may have looked similar but it was very much a brand new design rather than merely a face-lifted version of its predecessor, taking design cues from Porsche's Carrera GT along the way. Yes, the iconic flat-six engine was retained but peak power in the base model was increased to 237bhp this time round, with the Boxster S pumping out 295bhp from its brand new 3.4-litre six-pot. Add in a six-speed manual gearbox and things begin to look incredibly interesting.

Predictably precise the 987 Boxster handles like a dream and when combined with Porsche's Stability Management and Active Suspension Management systems it's virtually impossible to get things wrong. With such impressive levels of performance these aids provide a welcome layer of assurance allowing you to push on to your heart's content. And you're going to want to do exactly that because the Boxster S is just so damn engaging to drive. 

This low mileage Porsche Boxster S features the aforementioned 3.4-litre flat-six, being as it is a 2007 model when displacement increased from 3.2-litres and so has all the performance one could want. Presenting in a tasteful colour scheme of silver over a black leather interior it's a classic and desirable aesthetic. Add in the fact that the car is in excellent condition throughout and you really are on to a winner. Complete with full service history and an advisory-free MOT the car has clearly been cherished and well-maintained and remains an elegant and eminently usable example of the marque.
