Overview
546 of anything is quite a lot. 546 people is a sizable crowd. 546 quid will buy you a heck of a fancy dinner for two and a couple of bottles of pricey plonk, even at a posh restaurant. It would also buy almost 11 of our very first (and rather ill-fated) car. But we digress.
However, 546lb-ft of torque is more than “quite a lot”. It’s more than “a lot”, for that matter. In fact, it’s bordering on “crikey, what is it a Boeing 747” territory. Nevertheless, that is how many torques the BMW M50d has. Say what you like about the Bavarian tyre-botherers, but they certainly know how to get our attention.
So yes, the thumping great three-litre, inline-six, triple-turbo monster lurking under the bonnet is the star of the show here. But that’s not to say the rest of the car pales by comparison. The F15 (third generation) X5 is a hell of a well-equipped, luxurious and practical car. From the Rangie-style split tailgate and cavernous interior to the plush leather and wood adorning the surfaces, there’s much to admire here. If you’re looking for something that can eliminate vast distances with consummate ease and do so at quite unfeasible speed even when laden with a tonne of people and their ephemera, then this is definitely a vehicle you should be considering.
With a little under 90k on the clock, this handsome specimen is just about run-in and very much in its prime too. Overall it’s in very good order, with everything looking to be in fine fettle. The specification is excellent too.
And have we mentioned the 546lb-ft of torque? We have. Oh. Well, it’s the sort of figure that sticks in the mind. Especially as it’s on tap from about 2,000rpm and offers the sort of mid-gear acceleration and overtaking ability usually reserved for things that say ‘NASA’ on the side.
Anyway. This is a very nice X5, in fine condition, and it would make a quite fabulous daily driver. Alternatively it would be a tremendously luxurious way to tow your boat, show car, racecar, house or small planet. You know, because of the 546… (WE KNOW, WE KNOW – Ed)

Summary
Apparently we’ve mentioned the torque too much. Thankfully there’s much more to admire here than the sheer brute force offered by the powertrain.
The X5 is an exceptionally capable car, perfect as a family wagon or as a spacious, luxurious daily driver that just so happens to offer you all the room, oomph and towing ability you could ever need. We don’t believe in the idea of “all the car you need”, because we need all the cars, thank you very much. But this multi-turbocharged, well-appointed, handsomely specced SUV certainly gives us cause to rethink our stance.
And don’t forget, that engine delivers a whopping (Careful now – Ed)... Er. It’s very, very powerful.
