Description

The Maserati Merak SS represents one of the most desirable expressions of 1970s Italian automotive design. Introduced in 1972 as a more accessible companion to the Bora, the Merak shared Giugiaro’s unmistakable styling but employed Maserati’s compact all alloy V6. This lighter, longitudinally mounted engine allowed Maserati to offer a rare 2+2 layout within a mid engined body, combining everyday versatility with unmistakable Italian flair. Early cars reflected the period of Citroën ownership, using high pressure hydraulics for the brakes, clutch and headlamps, all mounted within a steel monocoque and tubular rear subframe with double wishbone suspension. The result was a car of exceptional balance and refinement, producing between 190 and 200 brake horsepower in standard three litre form.
The Merak SS, unveiled in 1975, sharpened the formula considerably. Maserati reduced overall weight, refined the suspension and introduced a cleaner front grille design. The three litre V6 gained larger Weber carburettors and a higher compression ratio, raising power to around 220 brake horsepower and delivering a far more urgent driving experience with greater mid-range strength. Later SS models moved away from the Citroën derived dashboard and hydraulic system as Maserati returned to its own components, giving the SS a more traditional feel to match its heightened performance. The result was the most capable and best resolved version of the Merak, combining elegance, practicality and striking Giugiaro lines with genuinely engaging dynamics.
This particular car is an exceptional example. Built in late 1974 but not registered until September 1975, it represents a key moment during Citroën’s acquisition of Maserati, making it one of the very earliest Merak SS models produced. Delivered new through Maserati London, it was later owned by Andy Leek, the pop musician and former keyboard player with Dexys Midnight Runners and is famously associated with his 1980 single Move On (In Your Maserati), where the car features on the cover.
Seven years ago, the car underwent an extensive rotisserie restoration supported by invoices exceeding £120,000. Virtually every component was refurbished or replaced and the engine was renewed and fully rebuilt. Finished in its original Verde Testudo metallic paintwork and complemented by a superbly crafted new tan leather interior, the car is offered with a Maserati Technical Certificate and a comprehensive history file.
Maintained to the highest standards, it drives with the precision and poise expected of a factory fresh example. With approximately 300 right hand drive SS Meraks ever produced and with as few as 50 believed to remain in the United Kingdom, examples of this quality are exceptionally rare. Coupled with its outstanding condition, provenance and timeless Giugiaro styling, this Merak SS represents a truly remarkable opportunity for the discerning collector.
