Description
Collectors take note. This is an exceptionally rare, fully restored (retaining matching numbers engine and gearbox) UK supplied car with similar performance to that of the fabled E28 M5.
Powered by an extensively upgraded 268bhp 3. 5 litre M30 engine (stamped on the head and block with 'Hartge'), and further modified upon delivery. All H5 S models were treated to some mild cylinder-head work, a hotter cam, equal length tubular exhaust manifolds, and a low-restriction exhaust system.
This particular 'SP' example is extra special however and as an early Hartge ‘prototype’ features unusual flat-topped Mahle pistons, and gudgeon pins that are located 1. 5mm lower on the con-rods than those found in all other 3453cc M30’s. The result is an increase in the 10:1 compression ratio compared to other ‘standard’ H5 S models. Additionally, the camshaft lobes have higher lift and more dwell angle than other Hartge examples.
This Alpine white UK right-hand-drive example was delivered to BMW dealer Sewell new in September 1984. On arrival it was immediately whisked away to Griffin Motorsport who were the official Hartge concessionaires in the UK. They performed the extensive upgrades which not only included the engine work, but the installation of a dog-leg five speed gearbox, the fitment of Bilstein dampers, Hartge interior and purposeful looking external bodykit.
The car underwent a massive 500 hour full restoration between 2011 and 2014. Fritz’s Bits in Somerset were commissioned to undertake the task and every item is documented – both in terms of the body restoration and mechanical elements.
The most recent custodian, who acquired the car from BMW specialists Classic Bahnstormers, undertook a deep dive into the history of this special car. Included in the history file is a wealth of correspondence with specialist BMW tuning agents (such as Birds) who are familiar with the car and have corroborated its authenticity. Further supporting all this is an original handbook with stamped history by Sewell up to April 1986, when thereafter the BMW dealer ‘Bates’ took over.
Some reviews of this actual car, depicting how special it is, can be found on YouTube. Search "Bmw E28 Hartge H5SP".
