Overview

Subtly menacing, isn’t it? Like a mafioso in a beautifully cut suit, or a yakuza henchman reaching into his briefcase, the triple-black colour scheme of this Golf whispers softly while also quite clearly carrying the proverbial big stick.

So – when is an R32 not an R32? When it’s a Golf R… The third-generation of super-hot Golfs that sit above the GTI as a halo lost the numbers in the model name, for the simple fact that it no longer had a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine, but instead a 2.0-litre four-cylinder one. But don’t go thinking that this move was in any way a compromise. Certain purists may have grumbled when the four-pot R was announced, but they soon ate their words when they saw the specs, and washed it all down with a chunky humble pie smoothie when they actually drove the thing. Quite simply, the Golf R is wild.

Wild, but also very sensible. Perhaps the most grown-up interpretation imaginable of the hot hatch genre, this fresh new take brought forward everything we knew about hot hatches in the classic style, and refracted it all through a premium filter. Yes, the original ethos shone through – eminent everyday practicality combined with a lairy side for when the mischief imperative takes over – but this was an offering that was easier than ever to justify as a family car or everyday commuter. With a choice of three- or five-door shells, buyers got a fully-loaded interior that was extremely well screwed together, with a chassis that was at once focused and cosseting. Sober and sensible when required, and a true hedonist on demand.

And you’ll be pleased to hear that this example has been owned since 2018 by a proper obsessive. The car only has 28,000 miles on the clock from new, and it has a full service history; the current owner bought it from the renowned marque specialist Wheelbase in Hersham, it’s had all of its servicing and MOT needs taken care of them ever since – and people in the know about such things will gladly tell you that Wheelbase is a highly respected name and they really know their stuff.

This, then, is a fully-loaded Golf R that’s always been lovingly looked after, has wanted for nothing, and – as its low mileage attests – presents like a much younger car. If you’ve been looking for an R, stop looking. This is the one you want.

Summary

With 266bhp from the factory, the Golf R in DSG form is able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds – so it’s as quick off the line as a Porsche Cayman, but you can take the whole family along for the ride. And it’s the torque that really does the business here; a peak figure of 258lb.ft is supremely robust, and with a broad spread between 2500-5000rpm, it’s all just where you need it. Not just quick off the line, but quick all the time – and the fifth-gen Haldex AWD system means that there’s always oodles of grip. 

Yet with all of this performance silliness going on, there’s still potential for mid-thirties mpg figures.
Is this the perfect everyday performance car? It very well might be – and you’d definitely struggle to find an example that’s been as pampered and cherished as this one. Bid keenly, otherwise we might just want to keep it for ourselves…
