Ferrari’s F40, capable of reaching 201 mph, stands as one of the most iconic supercars ever created, often spoken of in the same reverent tone as the legendary 250 GTO. Many enthusiasts still regard it as the pinnacle of Ferrari’s road-going achievements. With the F40, Pininfarina delivered a machine that came to define an era in automotive design, a shape so distinctive that generations of car lovers can recognise it instantly. Its DNA can be traced directly to Ferrari’s experimental GTO Evoluzione program, as well as the 288 GTO, the road car it ultimately succeeded.

Beneath its unmistakable bodywork lies a tubular steel frame strengthened with composite materials, especially around the sills and floor sections. Mounted within is a 2.9-litre, 2,936 cc twin-turbocharged V8 that produces around 478 bhp at 7,000 rpm, thanks to a pair of water-cooled IHI turbochargers operating at 1.1 bar of boost. Combined with its remarkably low weight with just 1,202 kg the F40 achieves a power-to-weight figure that remains astonishing even by modern standards. In performance terms, it was nothing short of explosive for its time, 0–60 mph in about 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph, making it the first production automobile to break the once-mythical 200-mph barrier.
