Overview

With every man, woman, and seemingly their dogs producing electric vehicles nowadays the problem arises, as is very much the case with non-electrified vehicles of the past, of differentiating between the sublime, the ridiculous and the downright dull. Fortunately there are a handful of manufacturers whose heads and shoulders stand that little bit taller than the rest and Swedish company Polestar is one such brand whose light shines brighter than most. Pun very much intended.

Having historically been a subsidiary of Volvo who together collaborated on the excellent V60 Polestar, among others, Polestar became its own entity in 2017 dedicated to producing electric vehicles and the company would subsequently produce some of the most revered electrified cars to ever grace tarmac, beginning with the highly acclaimed, if not particularly imaginatively titled Polestar 1 in 2019.

Now well established and with a host of additionally numbered vehicles in ascending order under its belt Polestar has proved itself to be a major player in the industry, and much of that success is down to that original halo two-door plug-in hybrid sports car.

Remaining in production until 2022 the Polestar 1 was based on Volvo's Concept Coupe from 2013 and remained relatively unchanged when it finally went into production. Handsome in an understated way it remains a stylish car and its carbon fibre body panels not only help to improve torsional rigidity but also keep the weight down, an important consideration when dealing with hybrid powertrains, especially in performance cars.

Speaking of performance, the Polestar 1 features a 2.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder engine that is both turbocharged and supercharged powering the front wheels, with an additional integrated starter generator sitting between the engine and the car's eight-speed automatic gearbox. Not only that but the rear wheels are powered by twin electric motors, giving an overall power output of a whopping 609bhp, which means a 0-60mph time of around four seconds and a 155mph (limited) top speed. Three lithium-ion batteries supplying 34kWh completes the rather alluring package.

This particular late model 2022 example comes to market fully detailed and in stunning overall condition both inside and out, with the vendor informing us that the car drives superbly with no faults at all. Hardly used, the car has covered just over 7K miles from new and comes with a 100% Battery State of Health certificate. Complete with full manufacturer service history – including its last full service in June of this year – and a recent full inspection, not to mention an advisory-free MOT under its belt, this is a truly excellent example of an incredibly rapid and hugely capable modern sports EV.

Summary

Understatedly elegant yet supremely capable, Polestar's original flagship still impresses. From out and out sports coupe to long distance GT it can be many things to many people thanks to its impressive hybrid powertrain and when you combine that with top spec components and a carbon fibre body the decision to pick up a good, hardly used example, just like this one, becomes easier and easier the more you consider it. In top condition and with low miles and full service history this could certainly be the 1 to go for.
