Description
This 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL ‘Pagoda’ is an original right-hand drive car, but is believed to have spent a large proportion of its life in the USA, possibly via Hong Kong, where it enjoyed salt-free roads. It wasn’t until later in its life when it was brought back home to the UK and painted in Grigio Silverstone and the interior trimmed in Cuoio leather to match the then-owner’s Ferrari 812 Superfast, as part of a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration. The precise date is not known, but around 2018, the then-owner swapped the 230 engine with which it came from factory for the 280 engine, which the car still benefits from today. A 2.8-litre, straight six engine that is both more powerful and smoother than the 2.3 the car originally had. The car has covered 72,000 miles from new.
In late 2022 (200 miles ago), the car underwent a full engine rebuild and subframe replacement to preserve its immaculate condition, at a cost of £22k. The bodywork has also been treated to a £4k refresh to match the immaculate interior. All work has been carried out by highly regarded Mercedes-Benz specialists, and the car was recently featured in an issue of the Mercedes-Benz owners club magazine, speaking to the car’s outstanding condition and history.
The 230 SL was first available in the summer of 1963 in three versions: folding soft top, a removable hardtop, and a fixed hardtop coupe. Designed to succeed the 190 and 300 SL, the 230 combined the best of both models – the driving dynamics of the 300 SL and the comfort of the 190 SL.
