Description
A beautifully maintained, low mileage, highly cherished pre-highline, classic M635csi in Zinnober red with beige leather, bought from Munich Legends in the mid-nineties, in the same ownership ever since.
Back in April 1997, Mrs Carol W and her husband found themselves suddenly carless. A speeding driver had carelessly collided with their cherished E24 635csi and much to their chagrin, the insurers wrote the car off. Luckily nobody was hurt, and this sad event did have one upside – it meant that the couple were able to buy a car that they’d always wanted – the M version of the E24, the M635csi. So, they soon found themselves at Munich Legends, and their dream became a reality. We have in the extensive paperwork file some lovely photos of the couple – together with faithful hound – on the day they collected the car that would become their pride and joy, and see many shows, concours and displays over the next quarter of a century. Sadly, Mr W is no longer with us, and Carol has reluctantly decided that the time has come for the M635csi to go to a new home, where the car will enjoy a new lease of life and be cherished and cared for. We have been asked to carry out the task of finding the right new owner.
BMW were in full attack mode in 1987. Full of confidence, as their E30 M3 romped around the race tracks of Europe, beating everyone in sight, BMW were quick to realise the potential of their Motorsport (M) brand, and equally as quick as creating two masterpieces to exploit their new found audience. Taking the fabulous, state of the art 3.5 litre M88 engine straight from the M1 supercar, the Motorsport team modified it for reliability/maintenance purposes and shoe horned it into their M5/M6 saloon/coupe platform. The result was simply staggering. Of course the modifications didn’t stop there – in fact everything from suspension, steering, brakes, drivetrain, even cooling was breathed on. This was not done as other manufacturers had tried – stuffing a load of horses up front and hoping for the best – this was a complete package for the discerning enthusiast who really knew what driving was all about. BMW had rewritten the rules, and blurred the lines between supercar (the M635csi was every bit as fast as the equivalent Ferrari) GT car and sports coupe.
Learning the lesson from the earlier 3.0 Csl, BMW knew that for customers to be willing to pay top money for something essentially unknown, the car would have to offer top levels of luxury as part of the package. So the M635csi was an elegant, well mannered car, comfy, bright, with acres of glass, 4 seats and a good sized boot. Civilised in traffic and around town, it will also drive like a thoroughbred sports car round a circuit, and blow you away. Have a look at this video of Nelson Piquet driving a new M635csi round Paul Ricard at the height of BMW Brabham’s F1 glory days. What a time to be alive that was! Click here for the Youtube video
BMW eventually made only 524 M635csi in RHD for the UK market, of which 422 were the pre ‘highline’ or facelift models – the facelift came in June 1987 so this was on of the last early or classic cars. Production, which had begun in 1984, finally came to a halt in 1989, by which time the die had been cast. Nobody would ever look at BMW in the same way again, and the tag line ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’ was born.
So this E24 M635csi comes with as much pedigree as you could wish for in a BMW (See photos and our bill of sale from 1997 in listing). We have carefully inspected and prepared the car for sale, and the result is a truly exceptional piece of BWM M history, a unique opportunity to own one of the most lovely examples of this highly desirable, rare machine.
