1963 Alfa Romeo

The finest example of the extraordinary and beautiful Sprint Speciale or SS model that we have ever come across and finished in the perfect original colour combination of Dutch Blue with a complimenting grey and blue interior. Penned by Bertone, the shape remains striking today and must have been truly jaw dropping when it appeared on the road in the early 1960’s. This really is one of those design studies that appears at a Motor Show that one never actually expects to see on the road and yet in this case it was bravely put into production.

This SS has spent most of its charmed life in two important car collections, first in Italy, hence it comes with its desirable original Italian black plates and later in the UK when it joined the illustrious collection of accomplished driver, pilot and raconteur Rob Lamplough. During these years it shared garage space with a Ferrari 250 GTO and a Spitfire amongst others, all of which were used with some verve by the owner.

The last owner, a regular Hairpin customer and connoisseur of fine Italian cars managed to buy the SS in 2020. A serious appreciator of originality, he could see how original and lightly used this example was and following purchase he sent the car directly to respected marque specialists DTR European Sports Cars for a full evaluation.

Although in generally presentable order, a number of body issues were identified. It was at this point that the owner decided to make the SS the best it could be and hence a full strip down began. The bodywork was taken back to bare metal and all areas made factory correct again. Mechanically, the original drivetrain was removed and stripped down before being fully rebuilt to authentic factory specification. All ancillaries were similarly stripped, inspected and refurbished or replaced as necessary. The bodywork was finished in the lovely original shade Dutch Blue whilst the barely worn, super original interior was carefully removed, cleaned and replaced, so important in retaining an original feel to the car. Extensive invoicing on file amounting to in excess of £100,000 documents the work completed.

Following this restoration the SS was invited to the prestigious 2025 London Concours and the certificate on file confirms its presence there.

A special Alfa that still brims with character and style that remains a capable driving companion and without doubt one of the very best of its type.
