Description
Introduced in October of 1976 as a successor to the 365 GT4 2+2, the 400 was like no other Ferrari before it. A completely new direction for Ferrari, and Pininfarina. The Colombo V12 remained but with many changes, in 1979 to comply with stricter emmissions regulations a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel ignition system was installed hence the denoted 400i. The 4.8l V12 produced 310hp and for the first time in Ferrari's history an Automatic transmission was offered. The design was very understated yet elegant compared to Ferrari's earlier designs, a design tyhat later flowed through to the angular Testarossa and 512 models, as well as the V8'[S of the era. This example, chassis 47589 started life as a standard 400i and finished in Nero Tropicale over a Beige hide interior. Built in July 0f 1983 and supplied through Maranello Concessionaires in Egham and sold to a representative of the Brunei Royal Family later that year. Noted within the original order forms is the addition of Rear Air Conditioning. The vehicle was sold VAT free for export purposes. Within the history for the car, it is noted that two examples were ordered, this car for Prince Jefri, along with another, chassic 54411 were both sent to renowned experts Lorenz & Rankl GmbH to be converted to Cabriolet specification with a fully electric roof. The conversion was carried out around 1984 before being shipped to Brunei. These cars were used in promotional publications by Lorenz & Rankl, showcasing their high quality conversions. Little is knowm about the history of the car throughout its time in Brunei, except that it rarely saw the road as is often the way with such vast collections. Re-imported in to the UK in 2002 the car has been subjected to meticulous attention to detail. Supporting invoices and documentation confirm that almost £90,000 has been spent ensuring this special car remains in the very best order. Specialists such as Nick Cartright & Bob Houghton have been responsible for the maintenacne throughout the previous period of long term ownership. Accompanying the car is a large history file with important documents such as original factory order forms, Maranello Concessionaire Archive letters, orignal book pack and service book. Presented flawlessly throughout, a real credit to its fastidious previous owner. A rare opportunity to purchase a much loved and cared for example with fantastic provenance. .
