Some Ferrari specs. are bold, some brash, some conservative and dare we say it, some a little “challenging”. But once in a while we see a car that has been composed with a level of understanding and finesse that makes us stop in our tracks. This is one such Ferrari.

The 812 GTS packing an often monstrous naturally aspirated V12 producing the thick end of 800 bhp is rarely considered elegant or sophisticated. However, this unique pairing of special order (4-layer) Verde Minerale (a pearlescent green admired for shifting subtly between ocean greens and blues depending on light) with the equally well referenced interior trim of Nero and Charcoal, leather and Alcantara, complimentary and contrasting stitching pattern just works so well. Add the finishing touches of silver forged racing wheels and callipers and you have what we think is the perfect, refined Ferrari GT.

Launched exactly 50 years after the debut of the last front engined Ferrari V12 Spider the 812 GTS hails a triumphant return for a model type that played a pivotal role in the marque’s history.

Ferrari’s V12 Spider story features many iconic models and began with the 1948 166MM and culminated in 1969 with the 365 GT4 also known as the Daytona Spider

Like its historic predecessors, the 812 GTS sets a new benchmark in terms of performance and exclusivity but also the most versatile, thanks to its retractable hard top which opens in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45 km/h

The 6.5-litre is just as you’ll find it in the Superfast: 789bhp and 529lb ft drive the rear wheels through a quick-witted seven-speed paddleshift gearbox and via a whole suite of electronic systems to ensure such incredible figures are genuinely useable on road. Among them is what Ferrari calls ‘Virtual Short Wheelbase’, but which we know as four-wheel steering. The key figures are sub-3.0secs to 62mph and a 211mph top speed.

Simultaneously frenzied and approachable, the 812 is a remarkable achievement roof on or off and is built around to the greatest engine of modern times.

Today the 812 GTS's place in Ferrari's lineup is occupied by the 12 Cilindri Spider. A successor though it is, it's a different type of car – less intense, less raw, the V12 a more distant cog in its constitution. In a way, then, the 812 GTS was never succeeded, and it certainly hasn't been beaten.
