All Ferraris are special of course, but this one goes that little bit further. Straight away the special order “Extra range” 4-layer paint Rosso Magma paint hits you with a gloss and flake unlike anything seen on more mundane cars. Then open the door to a rich soft chocolate (Cioccolato) Alcantara trim – think artisanal Italian stuff not Cadburys, and a beautifully judged range of interior carbon options and you have a car that looks sensational.
And the 296 GTB doesn’t lack in the go department either.
Ferrari's first V6 road car redefined the supercar segment with its all-new, 120-degree, twin-turbo V6 engine and an electric motor, powering the rear wheels only (unlike the SF90) giving you a combined 819 bhp all out but also an EV-only range of around 15 miles should you need it.
As the numbers suggest (0-60 in 2.9 seconds), the rate of acceleration is of the hold-on-tight/nervous laughter variety, verging on the uncomfortable, but weirdly addictive at the same time. This is a seriously rapid car.
It sounds great too, with plenty of turbo sound effects overlaying the tuneful V6 rasp. The Ferrari 296 GTB’s mix of power and engaging dynamics strikes a real sweet spot, redefining what a supercar can be. Across the ground it’s devastatingly fast, yet manageable and engaging when not travelling at warp speed. The V6 is a thing of beauty, and so’s the car itself: the visor-like windscreen, the buttresses, the 250 LM-inspired side vents.
This is a big step forward: electricity used to add depth and dimension to the supercar experience, to be there when it’s beneficial, but to step back and work in the shadows when it’s not. Perfect.
