BACKGROUND
The date is September 15th 1983, the location, The Frankfurt Motor Show, a new Porsche concept car is ready to be unveiled. That car is the technological masterpiece that is, the Porsche 959. A supercar designed to push the boundaries and show what Porsche (at that time an Independent company) could do. The production ready 959’s were produced between 1986 and 1987 (although some did run over), only 292 examples were made (including pre production prototypes and competition cars) and cost a staggering 400,000 Deutsche Marks. The performance figures were (and still are) incredibly impressive, 0-62 in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph, even by today’s standards that’s serious performance. However, what the 959 was really known for, was its technical advancements that would shape almost all modern cars. Sequential turbos, magnesium wheels with tyre pressure monitoring, active all-wheel drive system, automatic suspension ride height adjustments, in comparison to its rivals, it was a spaceship! Initially Porsche wanted to prove it’s motorsport credentials in GroupB, but with the series being outlawed, they decided to enter it into the 1986 Paris – Dakar rally where it not only finished, but finished 1st AND 2nd, an unbelievably result.
The 959 we have here was initially destined to go to Hong Kong but was actually first registered in Germany before being imported in 1997 by Porsche Centre Hatfield and sold to its only keeper (who registered it between his business and himself). Speaking with the owner, at the time he looked at all of the latest crop of supercars, but with some being too compromised, he and his family decided the 959 was the one for them, so the decision was made and the rest is history.
Throughout his ownership, it was used sparingly, only brought out for special occasions. In 2021, the owner was referred to us by a long standing client, as the 959 had a fault with its brake booster pump and after visiting two Porsche Centres it couldn’t be diagnosed. Having previously looked after several 959’s we were able to resolve the issue swiftly, and it was back on the road. With the owner delighted, our technical director Ollie Preston and him, formed a plan to completely go through the 959 to bring it up to its best and over £60,000 has been spent in that time (work including major service, overhaul front and rear shocks, replace clutch, along with a whole host more). Upon sale we will also be carrying out its next service.
As we’ve had the pleasure to look after a number of 959’s in our 25-year history, including prototypes! We have some of the world’s leading 959 engineers to support the new owner in their purchase and for future ownership. With so few 959’s being ‘On the button, ready to use’ and most importantly, original, it’s a real delight to think the next custodian could enjoy this one regularly and add to its story.
