1968 FORD MUSTANG

No one remembers Bullitt for the plot, and if we’re being honest, no one really remembers it for Steve McQueen’s acting prowess. In truth, the film is remembered for a 10-minute chase sequence, as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt hunts down an ominous black Dodge Charger.

The star of that scene, of course, is a 1968 Ford Mustang, finished in Highland Green. For many car enthusiasts, that scene etched a core memory into their brains, and lit a fire-like desire to see, drive and own a Highland Green Mustang.

This Mustang, however, left Ford’s Dearborn assembly plant in April of 1968, not green, but rather Diamond Blue. But after years of neglect, it found itself the subject of an extensive restoration, with parts invoices alone totalling in excess of $11,000.

Almost anyone could paint a Mustang Green and call it a day, but this car is more special. Whilst much of the styling is inspired by the movie, see the American Racing wheels and mesh grill, it has also injected elements of modern tech.

Uprated brakes and engine modifications that we’ll come onto later help to modernise the car, making it innately more usable and enjoyable. In the engine bay, you’ll find the car retains a 289ci V8, just as it left Dearborn, but now that engine wears Edelbrock E-Street cylinder heads, Ford Performance valve covers and air filters, and an Edelbrock intake manifold. These parts boost power, but also drivability, and thanks to a Magnaflow exhaust, the V8’s rumble can be truly enjoyed.

The interior is tasteful, like the movie car, it wears black bucket seats, and black carpets, all of which have been retrimmed or replaced where required. But, in keeping with the theme of the restoration, some Kenwood speakers have been fitted.

The car’s service file is stacked with paperwork, tens of invoices document every clip, fastener and panel that was bought during the restoration, and it’s clear that the car has been maintained well ever since.

Mustang ownership is a dream for many, but few opportunities will arise to own such a well-sorted example. Now finished in one of the most desirable Mustang shades, with a host of performance upgrades. It is ready to be enjoyed or improved upon thanks to the extensive Mustang aftermarket.
