1990 BENTLEY TURBO

It’s the early 1990s, you’re a successful city slicker, and you’ve just received a rather pleasant bonus. It’s time for a new car, something that makes a statement. Sure, you could head to your local Mercedes dealer and buy an S-Class, but that seems all rather predictable.

The best option is to turn to one of Britain’s greatest brands, Bentley. The Turbo R answers all your questions, it’s luxurious, studious and brilliantly powerful. The model was launched in the mid 1980s, and remained in production until the late 1990s. Built in Crewe, the Turbo R is a true Bentley.

Supplied new by Jack Barclay in London, this 1990 Bentley Turbo R is finished in Black over a Black interior with contrast red piping. The car sits on 7-spoke alloys, with chunky sidewalled tyres, the mesh grilles and subtle Turbo R badging hint at what hides under the bonnet.

The interior is suitably luxurious, and the aforementioned black hide is soft and supple. Though the interior’s most striking element is the wood-trimmed steering wheel. The audio system has been brought up to 21st century specification with a Blaupunkt head unit and a Rockford subwoofer mounted in the boot.

The Turbo R gets its name unsurprisingly from the Turbocharged 6.75-litre V8. But the R stood not for race, but road holding. Stiffer dampers and anti-roll bars mean that, despite the car’s near 2.5 tonne kerbweight, it handles remarkably well. The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, which is a GM unit that offers smooth gear changes and reliable performance.

Throughout its life, this Turbo R has covered over 99,370 miles. But most impressively, is that there are maintenance records tracing right back to the early 1990s. The car's condition is clear, but the invoices show it has been maintained lovingly. Most recently, at Bell Sport & Classic, just a few hundred miles ago.
