Overview
Maserati really has upped its game in the last quarter of a century resulting in a resurgence in popularity that harks back to the Italian auto maker's glory days, mainly due to Ferrari getting involved and taking over the reins from De Tomaso and Fiat in '99. It marked a positive turning point in the company's storied history but that's not to say owning a Mazza was never an exciting proposition. Not in the least. Historically revered for producing handsome luxury performance cars, as well as its truly impressive motorsport legacy, Maseratis were always inspirational, and indeed aspirational but a jump in build quality and reliability since Ferrari ownership means taking on a handsome slice of modern classic Italian exotica today has never been more appealing.
Case in point: the 4200 (also known as the Maserati Coupe and Maserati Spyder depending on your choice of roof), along with the likes of the Quattroporte V and MC-12, proved that Maserati was very much back in the thick of it and the Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled, V8-powered four-seater grand tourer remains a tempting proposition in 2026, 25 years after its initial introduction. Available as a coupe and a convertible the 4200 came equipped with a Ferrari-developed 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine developing 390bhp, all delivered sublimely to the rear wheels via a manual or “Cambiocorsa” automated manual transaxle gearbox – both six-speed, allowing for a sub-five second 0-60mph time.
This 2004 Maserati 4200 coupe is the far more practical of the two and arguably quicker too, due to its lower kerb weight in relation to the convertible and it presents beautifully throughout in its Grigio Nuvolari metallic exterior over burgundy leather interior. Complete with a comprehensive main dealer and specialist service history, as well as a long, advisory-free MOT the car reportedly drives perfectly. Well-specified from the factory, including the Cambiocorsa gearbox as well as the dynamic and adaptive “Skyhook” suspension system which allows for both long-legged cruising and more spirited shenanigans when in sport mode, there's certainly a lot to like here.
This then is a well-maintained, low mileage example that has been kept garaged during the current owner's tenure with the reason for sale sadly being stated as a lack of use.

Summary
Fast, handsome, practical and with a soundtrack to die for the Maserati 4200 remains an excellent and affordable way into modern era Maserati ownership. Comfortable and spacious it's a proper GT car that makes for an alluring and more exotic alternative to, as some might argue, colder German efficiency. With low miles and in superb condition both aesthetically and mechanically, a fact that's backed up by its excellent service history, this Maserati makes a lot of sense.
