The Audi RS6 Avant is already one of the great automotive contradictions: a family estate car that can embarrass supercars, haul a wardrobe, and cross continents at ridiculous speed without breaking a sweat. But this one? This one turns the absurdity dial all the way to eleven.

Finished in Merlin Purple, it looks less like a sensible wagon and more like something that escaped from a high-end tuning studio after dark. It’s a colour that shifts with the light, sulking in the shade and glowing like liquid neon when the sun hits it. Add the Black Styling Pack, and suddenly the whole car looks leaner, angrier, and faintly illegal in polite company. The contrast is spot-on: no chrome, no distractions, just menace.

Beloved by its buyers as a brute force blunderbuss with monstrous straight-line grunt, prodigious grip and all-weather performance - the “family estate on steroids” par-excellence. In its current (C8 generation) form, the RS6 reached a zenith, pairing an uprated version of the 4-litre V8 engine (now a 48v mild hybrid) and quattro all-wheel-drive system we’ve come to enjoy and respect with an unlikely sense of agility and dare we say it, fun. It is also a car that improved with each iteration and with options that added genuine benefit rather than simply adding to the cost.

It doesn’t take many miles to discover that a factory-spec RS6 is a hugely capable car from point to point, with tremendous straight-line pace and a thundering V8 soundtrack. Thanks to its clever air-suspended chassis the RS6 is supremely refined and compliant on the majority of roads, as befits function as a do-it-all estate. Numerous modes help you tailor its adaptive chassis to suit your needs so it can offer a genuinely supple ride, something many of its rivals fail to achieve.

If you’re in the market for a seriously fast estate car, then the Audi RS6 Avant remains the benchmark. Spacious, brutally quick and now with significantly improved handling, it’s hard to think of a reason why you’d be tempted elsewhere.
