Description
Widely regarded as the most successful rally car ever built, the Lancia Stratos has become a highly sought-after collector’s model, and only 492 examples were ultimately completed at Lancia’s Via San Paolo Works. The introduction of the Lancia Stratos HF marked a turning point for the FIA. Previously, Group 4 vehicles were modified production-based Group 3 GT cars, such as Lancia’s rally-winning Fulvia. Lancia was the first purpose-built automobile for the World Rally Championship.
The Stratos HF was designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone. It features a mid-engine layout that was powered by a 2.4-liter Ferrari Dino V6 and a 5-speed manual transmission. Bertone engineered and built bodies which consisted of a central steel monocoque with front and rear subframes, with lightweight fiberglass doors and ‘clamshells’ front and rear. Unlike manufacturers’ previous production models, the Stratos was conceived specifically to win rallies; its short wheelbase, wide track, and powerful Ferrari-built engine provided exceptional speed and agility.
The Stratos was phenomenally successful on the world’s rally stages, securing three consecutive WRC Manufacturers’ Championships from 1974 to 1976 and thereby cementing its legendary status. The Stratos has become one of Lancia’s most collectible models, combining rarity, a captivating exterior design, an athletic chassis and drivetrain, and a competition pedigree second to none. This example was imported to Hong Kong from Germany and was carefully maintained and stored in a climate-controlled collection.
