Overview

Quite often we find ourselves getting carried away with dreams of exotic V8-propelled luxury, sunny Spanish costas, and French corniches. We see the dreamy marketing photography, believe the sales pitch and decide that we simply must have whatever snarling two-seater we’ve just set our eyes upon.

But not so with this fast and powerful V8. Audi’s reassuringly German approach to styling and practicality means that this is one powerful beast that you can actually own and live with. First things first: this is an estate. So you can actually use all five seats while carrying enough luggage for two weeks by the sea.

And then we come to the real reason you’re here: that 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 sitting expectantly under the bonnet. This produces all the right noises and its 414 bhp is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The handling is a high point in Audi’s history and is sure to keep you entertained on any journey.

Despite its pumped-up bodywork that will pique the attention of those in the know, this particular example should pass subtly under the radar for most people, with its unassuming silver paintwork and black interior. In many ways a perfect Q-car, it comes with a reassuringly comprehensive service history and has just two former keepers. While there are a few areas that could use some attention, it should be a wise investment as B7 RS4s remain very sought after.

Summary

Cards on the table: we can’t fail to get excited by a fast estate here at PH, and the RS4 B7 has justifiably been inducted into the PH Heroes hall of fame. This one has a few areas to address to bring it back to its best but comes with a comprehensive service history and low ownership. As a usable modern classic, it makes a strong case for itself.
