Overview
Among BMW's grand touring lineage, the F12 6 Series Convertible occupies a particularly compelling position. Launched in 2011, it married elegant, sweeping bodywork with a beautifully appointed cabin, potent engines and a folding soft-top roof that could transform any journey into an occasion. Composed and stable at motorway speeds, refined enough for continent-spanning trips, and blessed with the kind of kerb appeal that only seems to intensify with age, it remains one of the most complete open-air grand tourers of its era. The interior, all leather and well-damped switchgear, has a quality of finish that holds up against rivals costing considerably more, and the boot is genuinely usable, even with the roof stowed.
While the 640d diesel found favour with many buyers for its impressive fuel economy and generous low-rev torque, the 640i tells a rather different story – and, for a PistonHeads audience, arguably a more interesting one. Under that long bonnet sits BMW's acclaimed 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six – the N55 – producing 320 bhp and 332 lb ft of torque, all fed through a beautifully calibrated ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. It's an engine that rewards engagement, delivering smooth, linear power with an unmistakably creamy straight-six voice note. In a closed-roof coupe, that soundtrack is a pleasant companion. In a convertible with the roof folded away, even more so.
And that brings us to this particular car: a 2011 BMW 640i Convertible that's been in its current owner's hands for over two years but an expanding family is forcing a more practical choice. Sitting on 20-inch BMW alloy wheels, it looks great and, although it bears some honest patina, it’s very presentable. The vendor reports that the electrically operated soft-top functions as intended, the heated front seats warm, the heated steering wheel heats, and the navigation system navigates. In all, it’s ready to go and while the roof and heated cabin elements will keep you snug in the winter, the sunshine which must surely be round the corner (please!) will look even more appealing when you can cruise around with the roof down.
