1972 BMW 3000

The early 1970s gave us some of the greatest homologation specials ever built, and few carry the presence or pedigree of the BMW 3.0 CSL. Lightweight panels, a rev-hungry straight-six and a competition record that cemented BMW’s touring car dominance — the CSL wasn’t just built to compete, it was built to win.

This 1973 example is one of just 500 factory right-hand drive ‘City Pack’ cars supplied to the UK. With only 1,039 CSLs produced in total, genuine UK RHD cars are firmly in blue-chip territory. Confirmed by BMW UK as built in December 1972 and first registered in May 1973, it remains a true, original ‘City Pack’ example, benefitting from the additional refinement UK buyers demanded at the time.

Finished in its original Taiga Green (Code 072), the car was the subject of a comprehensive restoration completed in 2016, with significant investment in both body and mechanical work. The shell was refinished throughout, including the underside, and the car presents today exactly as a CSL should — purposeful, sharp and unmistakably 1970s BMW Motorsport.

Mechanically it has been sensibly upgraded with an Alpina inlet manifold, Jenvey throttle bodies and Emerald management, improving drivability and reliability while retaining the character of the original straight-six. Braking has been uprated, the exhaust is stainless, and the stance is completed by refurbished CSL alloys. Some original components accompany the car.

Inside, the cabin remains largely original in appearance, with correct carpets, dash and trim, refurbished Scheel front seats and an Alpina steering wheel. It feels authentic, usable and properly sorted — a car to drive, not just admire.

The CSL remains one of the defining performance cars of its era. In Taiga Green, with the right specification and the right provenance, it is every inch the 1970s icon. A genuine UK ‘City Pack’ example with restoration pedigree and subtle improvements, this is a serious opportunity for the discerning collector.
