1973 Porsche

The Carrera RS 2.7 was conceived to allow Porsche to compete in the FIA’s newly created race series for production cars. Porsche later introduced the rare M471 “Lightweight” version to further enhance the RS 2.7’s performance. Only 200 examples of the M471 Lightweight were ever produced, and a mere 17 of them are right-hand-drive. This option significantly reduced weight by using thinner steel body panels, thinner window glass, lighter fiberglass bumpers, and racing seats. Sound insulation, rear seats, sun visors, radio, dashboard clock, and other interior fittings were eliminated.

The air-cooled flat-six engine from the 911S was enlarged and fitted with fuel injection, resulting in a 2.7L engine producing 210 horsepower on the 2.7 RS. The Carrera RS also received wider rear wheels and improved suspension. Wind-tunnel testing led to the creation of the distinctive “Bürzel” ducktail rear spoiler, which significantly reduced rear lift at high speeds and remains a defining feature of the model.

This example was originally delivered to the UK and finished in Grand Prix White with red lettering. It was purchased new by the championship-winning rally driver Harold Morley, who campaigned it with Bob Lindquist in the 1973 Welsh Rally. This 2.7 RS Lightweight retains its matching-number engine and is now presented in the correct rally racing livery. The RS 2.7 is regarded as one of the most desirable air-cooled 911 models, as it was the first 911 to feature the “Carrera” name and the first to bear the “RS” designation.
