Overview

God bless the French. Along with their delectable cuisine they've also given us some cracking hot hatches over the years. From the Renault 5 Turbo to the Peugeot 205 GTI the pool of Gallic performance hatchbacks from which to draw is as deep and it is refreshing. Barring the award-winning, fully electric Renault 5 E-Tech with its obvious nods to past glories there isn't much nowadays in the way of exciting small cars from any of the major French manufacturers, which is a crying shame.

Today then, for those after a modern classic sporty runabout or perhaps wishing to fulfil youthful dreams of owning a souped-up '90s hatchback this rather lovely 1998 Peugeot 106 GTI could be just the ticket. As the spiritual successor to the aforementioned and highly revered 205 GTI the performance-oriented 106 GTI certainly had some large footwear to fill, but fill them it did and it remains an excellent used buy in the classic market, especially in this condition.

Joining the 106 ranks in '96 as part of the model's second-phase updates the diminutive front-wheel drive GTI was and still is hugely fun to drive, thanks in part to such a cracking chassis and it remains a stalwart of the hot hatch scene. Small, nimble and with 120bhp available from its 1.6-litre 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox the car weighs in at 950kg making for a 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds before topping out just shy of 130mph, solidifying those hot hatch creds.

This particular 1998 example comes to market in superb overall condition and with decent service history. A wholly original, low mileage car, this '90s hot hatch hero reminds us of a time when Peugeot used to make fun, exciting cars and presents today not only as a fine representation of the marque but also as a potentially shrewd investment to boot.
