Overview
Introduced in 2006, the first-generation Porsche Cayman took the Boxster’s excellent mid-engined platform, smaller footprint (compared to the 911) and dual-boot setup, and ensconced it in what we think is one of the best-looking body designs of the 2000s.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the Cayman was first unveiled, as it still not only looks fantastic, but also manages to hold its own against the majority of ‘sports’ cars and traffic on the road to this day, especially when considerately upgraded such as this particular example is, boasting an enlarged throttle body, ECU remap and more.
Having been in the care of the current owner since 2018, this late 987.1 Cayman S has been used and enjoyed, evidently cherished and kept in excellent condition (barring a few age-related imperfections) and is reported to be in excellent mechanical health, with a recent service and clean MOT certificate attesting to this statement.

Some wear is noted to the plastic trims around the driver’s window switches
-
Similarly, there are a few areas of scuffing on the door sill trims and lower door cards
-
Both of the Sports seats are lightly patinated from years of use, but are free of any heavy wear or damage, save for a minor abrasion on the outside of the driver’s seat upper bolster
-
The high-traffic areas such as the gearstick and handbrake have gone ‘shiny’ over the years, but we’d note the steering wheel looks to be in remarkably un-worn condition
-
The rear load area is clean and tidy with no noted staining or noticeable damage to the plastics
-
Being very particular, we’d point out some light corrosion beginning to show on the boot struts
-
Overall, a very well-kept cabin with no reported faults or issues
-
The frunk is in a similarly excellent condition, with some bubbling around the boot latch/striker
Exterior
-
Metallic grey bodywork in good overall condition
-
Xenon headlights (OEM)
-
We’d expect to see some light stone chips to the front end upon close inspection, but these are largely hidden in day-to-day use
-
There is an area of damage on the side skirt/arch aft of the nearside front wheel
-
A small touched-in scuff is visible on the nearside front bumper lip
-
Elsewhere, there are a couple of small scratches on the fuel filler lid, larger stone chips on the mirror caps, and some typical stone chips to the rear of the arches
-
All four wheels present well with no kerb rash or damage, but we would note some light bubbling beginning to show around the tyre valves
-
The seller states that at the most recent MoT test the examiner commented that the underside was “immaculate”
-
Michelin pilot sport tyres all-round, with the seller quoting tread depths of ~6.5mm front and ~5mm rear
Mechanical
-
3,386cc flat-six naturally aspirated engine producing 295bhp from factory
-

-
IPD intake plenum with 82mm throttle body
-
Upgraded air intake
-
Porsche OEM short shift kit
-

-
The seller notes that the engine uses no oil, and runs well with no sign of any smoke or other issues
Summary
The debate of Boxster vs Cayman vs ‘full fat’ 911 is one that will rage until the end of time itself; all three platforms have their merits, but if you only need two seats and want plenty of practicality, all the fun of a flat-six and a smaller footprint (not to mention the balance offered by a mid-engined setup) then it’s hard to argue against the Cayman as the best do-it-all model in the 9X7 range.
These days, the first-generation Caymans also enjoy something of a modern-classic appreciation, with extensive aftermarket support from both enthusiasts and specialists, who will help you get the best out of these fantastic cars. This particular example also boasts some considerate upgrades already, meaning you’re off to a flying start, whether you just want a well-kept Cayman with a little extra poke, or you’re going to take this example up a notch or two further.
